Flash 10.3.181.23 will not install

I have been having problems over the last few days with Flash.  Last Friday I got a message telling me to update my Flash Player to the newest version.  I downloaded it directly from the site and tried to install it.  It completes the install, but every time I goto a site that requires Flash, it tells me to upgrade again.  Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

Here are my specs:

OS:  Windows XP Pro (Service Pack 3)

Browser:  Firefox (Most recent update), IE doesn't work either

I am the system admin, and am always logged in.

I have Norton, no toolbar. (I hate toolbars)

    Correct answer

Followed the instructions from Mozilla.  No luck as of yet.

I tried to uninstall FF and then reinstall it, but I think I goofed a bit.  I left all addons, extensions and plugins as they were.  I'll try a complete uninstall/reinstall tomorrow.

As for Norton, nothing can preloaded on my machine.  I built it myself, purchased, my own copy of Norton and ran with it.

As for Norton products that run in FF, I have the Symantec IPS 2.0 Extension.  I've already tried disabling it and running the Flash install in various forms.  It does not seem to be a problem.

I'll get back to you guys tomorrow with the results of my FF un/reinstall.

Hi, I have some info on Uninstalling and re-Installing FF that you may find helpful.

    http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing%20profiles#w_starting-the-profile-manager

Be sure to read each section of the above link, especially the last 2 or 3.

The following link has directions on Uninstalling the current version of FF and reverting to a previous version. This info is near the end. The first part is about Flash Player. I would think some of it would apply for an Uninstall and Install of the same version. Other users that have done this expressed a lot of trouble since they lost settings/profiles/bookmarks etc. I think both of these links address those.

    I hope this works!

Hi, What I would suggest is the following.

    1. Go to Add/Remove and Uninstall Shockwave Player, when it's finished, Reboot

    2. Disable all Extensions, including any of Norton

    3. Reset Theme to Default

    4. Disable Norton by checking this method: Now you may or may not have all of these, so disable if they are there.

Disable RealTime Protection of Norton and these:

Right Click and Open Norton. Turn off Smart Firewall and Auto Protect

Under Miscellaneous Settings, Disable Norton Product Tamper Protection

    Symantec NCO BHO

    - Symantec Intrusion Prevention  (This is the IPS 2.0 you mentioned)

Let me know if you have any questions about any of the above. If not, when you are finished close all browsers windows except the FF browser. Then go to this site and when you receive that yellow bar, follow the prompts again. Hopefully you won't get the yellow bar popping back up. If it doesn't then see if that Shockwave Flash plugin is now Installed.

All steps followed, yellow bar still pops up.  No sign of Shockwave anywhere on my system.

Hi, I am really puzzled about this. After you followed the prompts from that yellow bar, what kind of message if any did you receive? Did you reboot afterwards?

It is difficult to understand why that Shockwave Flash plugin will not Install. I've seen FF have many issues and not working, but not Installing? Only the one that I mentioned with BitDefender over a year ago.

You don't happen to have any DLM/getplus or get_atlcom addons/plugins in FF do you?

If you need to re-enable anything that we disabled or changed go ahead and do that if you want.

I'm going to take a look at the Flash Troubleshooting Guide to see if there is anything related to this SWF plugin. It's here if you want to review it:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/191/tn_19166.html

I've already been to Firefox and didn't find much. Their Support Forum is confusing to me and very hard to follow.

If there are any other addons/plugins/extensions in the FF browser that you can think of that may be conflicting, let me know.

I'm sorry this last procedure didn't work. Will let you know what I find out.

    Thanks for the great cooperation!

Thank you, nice screenshot. Well everything is correct for IE and FF. Did you have a chance to check on that FF plugin?

That is the control for Flash Player in the FF browser. Let me know on that.

In the meantime, I'll see if there is anything in your thread that needs checked further.

Nothing showing up in FF for either Flash or Shockwave in Plug-ins/Add-ons.  I still get the notice that I need to update Flash in order to watch anything on Youtube or other media sites.

    June 15, 2011

Ok, thanks. That I don't understand since that hardly ever happens with FF. I've seen this one other time, about a year ago and it was due to BitDefender if I recall correctly.

I just noticed that the version of IE or FF isn't listed, so please list those.

In FF, do you use any Theme other than the Default?

    Do you have any Extensions?

Do you use RealPlayer, Silverlight or Quicktime?

Do you use ad block or ad block plus or any Flash blocking application?

What Norton addons/plugins are Installed into the browser?

What is the version of Norton that you use? NIS or 360/version #?

The only plugin we are looking for in FF is "Shockwave Flash" plugin.

That's the reason the websites are asking, they are looking for that control:-)

And we are trying to find out why it isn't Installed. I remember something about Shockwave Player, which I think you said you Installed? Let me know on that. Seems like there was a conflict, but I'll check.

    Thanks,

I have tried to install 10.3.181.22 as well and encounter the same problem.  As far as previous versions go, I have uninstalled, then reinstalled in a vicious cycle of death.  Thus far I have tried to even go back to older versions without any luck.  I'm not sure if it helps to solve my issue, but I had updated not only Flash at this time.  I also attempted to update Shockwave, Reader and Java.  Is it possible that one, or all, have caused my fault?

    June 14, 2011

Hi, Well that could have caused a glitch. I wouldn't have recommended that, but since it's done, let's check a couple of things regarding Flash Player.

Using IE, go to Tools, Manage addons and under "Show" look for Shockwave Flash Object. Make sure it's Enabled and is the version 10.3.181.23.

Using FF, look in all plugins for Shockwave Flash plugin and make sure it's Enabled and the version is 10.3.181.22 (different version that the IE)

Do that first and then we'll see if anything else is needed.

    Thanks,
