Flash 10 - I have tried everything!

I have been trying (unsuccessfully) for 2 weeks to install Flash 10 (following a prompt to update - wish I hadn't now!). I have scoured the forums and tried everything mentioned so far. I'm running XP and IE8. Started off with the "failed to register" problem. Uninstalled using the uninstall download then reinstalled using the downloadable installer then had the tn-19166 error. Can anyone help please

Was able to correct a friend's computer doing the same thing. Tried everything to no avail. Stumbled across a knowledge base article that suggested the Adobe software was an untrusted publisher. In Internet Explorer, go to Tools>Internet Options>Content>Publishers and see if Adobe is listed in the "untrusted" tab. If it is remove it, then you hopefully will be able to install the Flashplayer update as I was able to. Hope this helps.

    Hi,

thanks for your interest and help.  I followed your detailed instructions, but Adobe is not under the untrusted tab (there were a couple of Microsoft listed there, should I remove them?)  Thanks again.

No, you can leave those there. I have them too, and I remember my friend's PC had them as well. Sorry to hear that Adobe was not listed like my friend's. Turned out it was easy fix for me but after reading the threads here seems like a common problem for alot of people. I was just hoping that my solution might work for someone. I did uninstall Adobe Flashplayer but that did not resolve the problem. It wasn't until I found the Adobe System entry in the untrusted publisher section and removed it that I was able to get Flashplayer to install. Seems like alot of good help in this form so maybe someone will post a solution that will work for you. Good luck!

I've tried everything I have been reading as posible ways towards results.  If it means anything to anyone regarding this, I haven't gotten my videos to play at Opra, Foxfire, IE8, and now I tried some Google browser and at least I can see colors and my background pictures at YouTube.  Yet still no videos and the rest all had black and white only on the page.  I did find the application tester and it tells me that all is working and installed.  I even got the new 210MB Reader 9.2 with no problems.  I did notice that the active x for shockwave was in IE8 add ons or what ever they are called, but to get the x there for the flashplayer is my quest now I guess.  Well back to the everythings I can try.  Hope that might be of help or get us closer.  The worst part was that they get us to remove the older version then leaving us with nothing working is just plain lousy.

Hello dtunzz, I know you responded to frustratedcarol, but I think she probably solved her problem. I had been trying to help her.

I will be glad to try to help you. Here is what I need for you to do.

First, stop doing anything, don't install anything else, don't change or remove anything and don't add anything.

    2. What operating system are you using? Windows, XP, Vista ?

    3. Go to add and remove and list everything that is Adobe, (like Flash Player 10 activeX, or whatever)

    4. In Manage add ons, list what is there and if it is Enabled or Disabled

I need to know what you have before I can help you.

    Let me know.

Hello eidnolb (or anyone there who can help),

I hope that you will be able to help me with this problem!   I have been trying to figure it out since on or before Nov 3rd when trying to watch youtube and got message "Hello,.. java disabled or need to update flash player".

I've been uninstalling and installing Adobe flash player but get error message "failed to register",

java appears to be enabled, I read numerous forums and followed suggestions, updated AVG, ran full scan, ran malware scan, uninstalled AVG, uninstalled malware program, updated java, uninstalled the previous versions of java, updated Windows - except Windows XP Service Pack 3 = failed, tried to restore my computer to a previous date but it would not restore, have uninstalled using Adobe uninstaller - installed from Adobe website, turned off windows firewall, security is down to medium or lower;  I have spent hours and hours going over this problem but getting no good results.

This seems to be a problem that many people are having....

I  read your posts and checked my computer for the information that you had asked others to give:

this computer has Windows XP, Internet explorer 7,

At 'add/remove programs' - the Adobes are: Adobe Acrobat 5.0, Adobe Download Manager 2.0 (remove only), Adobe Reader 7.0.8 - there are 3 updates installed on 8/6/2006.

At downloaded program files - there is a Shockwave, status: unknown, Total size: 4KB, it has no dates, Version: 0.0.0.1.  There were the other listed at Downloaded program files but I don't know what they are and couldn't copy to here.

At Manage Add-ons - Adobe PDF Reader is Enabled Active X Control.  I also found & disabled a google toolbar at Manage Add-ons.

Can you please give me advice and hopefully a solution to this issue that has gotten to my last nerve?

I am not a computer whiz or tech person, please keep in mind if giving directions.  (I hope that I haven't enabled and changed things that I shouldn't have while trying to correct this issue).

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration!

    Best wishes,

    Sthrn

Hi marcmarc12345, I read the article that you linked to.  I'm glad that it worked for you, anything that works is worthy to be told.  The Microsoft Support Engineers have stated most of what was in that article.  The problem is that not one solution works for everyone, there are too many variables involved, as you might have read.  Getting these ducks in a row is what is frustrating. Just one duck out of order stops Uninstall/Install. I and others spend time trying to ascertain

what ducks are involved and where they are and get them into their right place.  That takes time as information is shared back and forth to try to make this determination. It is not as simple as do an Uninstall and then do an Install, if that was true, the forum on F.P./ActiveX would not be here.

Read over my exchange with frustratedcarol, for example.

One thing in the Yahoo article you linked to, they did not mention it was needful to Reboot after any install and to be sure

to turn their Security back on.

P.S. glad you had all of your ducks in a row.:-)

I guess in some cases fortunately it is and with all the articles about various solutions it was THAT easy after 50 times trying. What I liked about it was 2 clicks on the link after I unistalled and it worked. Good luck.

I am still trying (unsuccessfully) to get Flast 10 to work. I have repeated all the suggested procedures over and over again to no avail. I have just tried (yet again) the SubInACL suggestion but still have the same "Failed to Register" message. I am not a techie can anyone come up with a solution that will work please.

    September 17, 2009

Have you confirmed with Adobe if F.P. is or isn't installed? There are occasions that F.P. is installed, but something is preventing it from working. Perhaps with all of the different procedures you have tried something is now amiss. The first thing I would do is go to www.adobe.com/software/flash/about  If you have any F.P. version installed Adobe will tell you that version. Make a note just of what the result is.

Second, go to Tool>manage add ons, find Shockwave Flash Object or Shockwave Flash, either wording & hi-light it, then look for a small

bar that says "Update Active X", Click on that and when the update has completed, close all windows and your browser and REBOOT your computer. This is very important. Sometimes this is all that is needed. Not sure with your situation but it has been with others.

Try these two things and post back.

Thankyou for taking the time to try and help.

Adobe just tells me I need to dowload F P so I assume that it's not there. I ran the download again and the "Failed to Install" with a note referring me to tn_19166 (again). I have tried the stand alone uninstaller and installer several times but got the "failed to register" message.

In "manager add ons" there is no "update Active X" just "search for this add-on via default search provider" or "disable" the former just takes me to google.

I do not seem to be the only person on this forum with the same problem - we all seem to be going in ever decreasing circles!
