Flash ActiveX (21) update notification, MMS.cfg, etc.

Hello, we have always deployed the MSIs for PPAPI and NPAPI as well as an MMS.cfg file to suppress update notifications, etc. We are moving to Windows 10 and I now see that we don't really need to package PPAPI or NPAPI as we do not deploy Firefox and Chrome auto-updates its Flash instance. We'll just be applying the latest ActiveX version via WIndows Update and maintaining it with SCCM 2012 via Software Update collection.

I am needing to know if there is still any reason to keep using our MMS.cfg file to suppress update notifications for Flash (>21) ActiveX, or if the application no longer notifies of updates, or if there has been some other change to this feature. Thanks!

    Hi,

    If you're upgrading to Windows 10 and will ONLY be using IE or Edge there is no need to use the mms.cfg file as all Flash Player updates for IE/Edge will be distributed by Microsoft via Windows Update.


    If you will use browser's that support the NPAPI or PPAPI plugins (e.g. Firefox, Opera), then you'll need to continue to deploy those plugins and use the mms.cfg file to suppress the update notification.

    Thanks, so the ActiveX version does NOT prompt for updates when it becomes superseded like the PPAPI and NPAPI versions do?

    Not on Windows 8 and above.  As of Windows 8, Microsoft embeds Flash Player in IE (and in Edge on Win10).  Due to this Flash Player updates for IE/Edge on these operating systems are released by Microsoft via Windows Update.
