Question

Flash Download not effective on iMac, OS X 10.11.6, using Safari

I have been asked to download Adobe Flash V23.0.0.207  multiple times and have done so with no indication of failure.  Using the tool on the Adobe website tells me that I have V23.0.0 installed.  Flash seems to work fine, but I want to stop the daily requests to update my version.  Please help!

It's sounds like you have Flash Player installed, but that it's blocked in Safari, or that Safari's internal state is messed up and it's not detecting that Flash Player is installed.

You *do* need to have both Flash and JavaScript enabled, and it's common for ad-blocking plugins to cause these kinds of symptoms.

I'd recommend starting here:

Enable Adobe Flash Player for Safari

If you're still stuck, uninstall and re-install Flash Player:

Uninstall Flash Player - Mac:

https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-mac-os.html

Install Flash Player:

https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

If that doesn't work:

See the "Try Disk Utility" section:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203176

While you're there, choose Repair Filesystem Permissions (Verify will frequently return clean, but then Repair will still fix a bunch of problems).

Once that's complete, try Safari again.  If it doesn't work, reboot and try the uninstall/reinstall steps again.

Thank you for the detailed instructions.

I confirmed that the “Enable” part was as it should be, then

uninstalled and reinstalled Flash, just to be thorough, then I

followed the directions for running Disk Utility. Note that the article has a header which reads "This article has been archived and is no longer updated by Apple.” The options I saw did not exactly match what is currently posted in this article, however I clicked on “First Aid” which appeared to initiate the desired check. The exit code was 0 and operation was successful, so it appears that all is OK. I do not see an option to Repair, either in the buttons or in the top menu.

I will wait for a week to see if another prompt appears for me to download the latest version of Flash. If not, then I will mark the answer as being Correct.

If you discover a need or a new way for me to Repair Permissions (I used that Disk Utility in an earlier OS X version, so I know what you mean) and want me to try it, please let me know.

Thank you for your help. Your suggestions were presented very clearly.

Fingers crossed!

Pamela
