Question

Flash not working with any Mac browsers

  • August 21, 2011

I have:

Mac OS X 10.6.8

Firefox 6.0

Google Chrome 13.0.782.112

Safari 5.1 (6534.50)

Library/Internet Plug-ins/Flash Player.plugin

Library/Internet Plug-ins/flashplayer.xpt

Library/Internet Plug-ins/DirectorShockwave.plugin

Whenever I go to a page with Flash content in Google Chrome, it says "The following plug-in has crashed: Shockwave Flash"

I'm in YouTube's HTML5 trial, but the same thing happens when I visit any page on YouTube.

Whenever I go to a page with Flash using Safari, it says "Flash version 9,0 or greater is required / You have no flash plugin installed"

Whenever I go to a page with Flash using Firefox, the Flash content area is blank.

I have tried deleting and reinstalling various browsers and plug-ins many times -- manually, using TrashMe, and with Adobe's official installers/uninstallers.

I have tried deleting cookies, browser caches, etc etc.

I updated my virus definitions and performed a full scan with VirusBarrier Express but it found no malware of any kind.

Help! What can I do to fix this?

Thanks,

Steven.

BTW, when I go to about:plugins in Chrome, it says:

FYI, I finally solved this problem by manually copying Flash Player.plugin from Library/Internet Plug-ins/ to ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins/.

    Hi Steve,

Thanks for posting back with the solution that worked for you!  I'll update our bug with your workaround.

    Thanks all.

I have sent Chris the crash logs as requested and funnly enough Flash will work in a clean install in Opera.

Nothing else is working so I think I'll just use Opera whenever I really have to view Flash content until Adobe releases a new version of the plug-in.

    Hi Steven,

It sounds to me like this is an issue many of us have run across since the release of Flash Player 10.3.183.5. This release has caused many problems, and from our testing the problems are present across all browsers and all platforms. The "current" bug for tracking the progress on this is https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=bug&id=2940617, in case you are curious. I'd suggest trying to reinstall a previous version, try the new beta version, or wait (like we are) for a patch to be released soon.

    Hello,

Did you do permission "fix" on Adobe after install?

You know, boot from install CD go to disk utility

and run permission check and then fix if it wasn't done.

Not that it will make Flash Player work mind you.

Just wondered if you did that. Do you have an Intel Mac?

There might be the "acceleration" issue

that may apply to why it is not working.

The large screen feature is not working either.

(I haven't gotten it to work either so I am just trying to help

    at what may be ideas.)

I wondered if there were known issues with other

firefox add-ons like Web Developer extensions  etc...

    installed in browser.

There is some info at Apple.com forum for Flash Player too.

    Hello,

I'm sorry you're running into these crashes, it does sound odd that it's happening across all browsers (especially Chrome.)  Can you send me (ccampbel@adobe.com) a crash log from Chrome so we can investigate further?  Here's some instructions on where to get this log:

Google Chrome for Mac OS X

    Thanks,

    Chris

    Two points of clarrification:

    # I have no other plug-ins in my plug-ins folder other than the three listed above

    # Firefox is now saying "The Adobe Flash plug-in has crashed. No report available."

Can someon from Adobe please chime in?

New development: Flash started working again on my son's user account on this Mac, though it still doesn't work in my account.

So I went hunting for user account related information that may not have been updated during those repeated uninstalls and reinstalls.

All I could find was ~/Library/Preferences/Macromedia so I deleted that, restarted and reinstalled Flash, but it's still not working.

    HELP!!!

Most likely nobody will see your question posted in the FAQ section.
