Flash Player 10.1 fails on NWS enhanced radar animations

Hi,

I have been unable to find an answer to a problem I have accessing one of my favorite web sites, the NOAA NWS web site.

When you visit their site for a location, (such as for a location near Albuquerque at http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?map.x=133&map.y=175&site=abq&zmx=1&zmy=1 ) one of the options is to view a real time weather radar page. An example link is at http://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?rid=abx&product=N0R&overlay=11101111&loop=no . From that radar image page, you can select several "enhanced" radar loop animations that use Flash.  an example link of the radar animation is at http://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?rid=ABX&product=N0R&overlay=11101111&loop=yes .

My problem is that, while the first time I load an animation everything works, most of the time the second radar loop fails to load, like it fails to find and load the new animation image frames. My guess is that each additional load has around a 50% chance of working. When it fails to load, the animation (application?) window in the browser simply displays a gray box. When this occurs, I have to exit the web browser and restart to reset Flash. While this is happening, I can right click on the Flash window and see the context menu, but selecting the settings option does nothing.

This problem started after upgrading to version 10.1, (10.1.53 upgrading from 10.0.45). Yesterday I upgraded to the new Flash version (10.1.82) first using a deb package downloaded from the Adobe web site, then using the Ubuntu package after uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox. (had a bit of fun as when I started this, the 10.1.53 version was the latest, but this version disappeared and was replaced with the 10.1.82 version mid operation) Unfortunately, the latest version still fails on this web site. The Firefox error log does not record anything relating to this page loading (or not loading). Also, it does not make any difference weather the "use hardware acceleration" option is checked or not. In fact, since the upgrade to 10.1, this does not seem to do anything at all as full screen video playback used to run smoothly in Flash (youtube and hulu), but now is jerky at 5 to 6 frames per second. This may be unrelated and is not a very big issue.

I am running Ubuntu Linux 32 bit Intel distribution version 10.4.

I am using Firefox 3.6.8 (this has been upgraded twice since Flash was upgraded to 10.1)

Flash version is 10.1.82

All of the software packages were upgraded to the latest version last night.

At this time, I am reading the flash player administration guide to see if it has any helpful information. I have also downloaded the latest 10.0 Flash version and will manually install it later to confirm that the NWS radar animations work OK using it.

Any help or suggestions are welcome.

Thank you,

William

    Hi all,

Since my last post, I have done some testing with old versions of the Flash player. First I completely removed the Flash installed with the Ubuntu package manager Synaptic. I then copied the tested version libflashplayer.so shared library to the Firefox  plug in directory at /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins .

Version 10.0r45 is the latest version of the Flash player that works with the NWS enhanced radar animation web application. Any version 10.1 version Flash player that I can find (10.1r53_64 and 10.1r82_76).

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what is wrong or how to fix the issue? Is the NWS exploiting the security breach bug in 10.0 that version 10.1 is supposed to have fixed?

    Thanks,

    William
