Flash Player 10 does not work in IE or Firefox. What could it conflict with?

I'm  using Firefox 3.6.8 (and sometimes IE 8.0.6001.18702IC) on Windows XP Pro, SP 3.

For some weeks now, I have been unable to hear any sounds on anything Flash-based, from YouTube to games at MSN.com or embedded videos on any site using Flash.  Initially I had assumed it to be because of having QuickTime installed because I know QT likes to hijack everything.  I uninstalled QT (and Real Player) and Flash Player then reinstalled Flash Player (and Shockwave Player just in case) and guess what?

Yup.  Nothing.  When I uninstalled everything, I used a program called Revo Uninstaller, which includes a registry cleaning option.  I then used Abexo and WinASO's registry cleaners to make sure I got everything else that even looked like QuickTime off my hard drive.

When I reinstalled Flash, the following programs appeared in C:\Windows\system 32\Macromed\Flash:

Flash 10i.ocx (10.1.82.76)
FlashUtil10i_ActiveX (10.1.82.76)
FlashUntil10i_Plugin (10.1.82.76)
genuinst (6.0.2800.1531)
FlashUtil10i_ActiveX.dll (10.1.82.76)
NPSWF32.dll (10.1.82.76)
KB931433
FlashInstall
Install
Flashplayer.xpt

When I check IE's "Tools" and look for add-ons, it says that Flash (Shockwave Flash) is enabled.  I even enabled the other Adobe add-ons for Acrobat and such just to be sure.  Firefox shows Shockwave Flash and Shockwave for Director both to be enabled.  The Flash control panel settings don't help: I have all sites set to store about 100 KB on my computer to make sure there's enough room for everything but still nothing.

Before anyone asks, my audio drivers are up to date, thanks to the manufacturer's website.  I have DirectX 9.0c installed and everything else works fine.  I can play audio and video elsewhere with no problems.  It's only Flash that's showing me this trouble and there's no hint as to what else could be interfering with Flash.

Any ideas?

    Correct answer pwillener

I went through the list and checked it twice, looking for modules that were naughty or nice. Still no go.

In case you need it, here are the settings from Flash's control panel:

    Global Privacy: always ask

Global Storage: set to 1MB, both boxes are checked to allow storage of common components and third party content

Global Security: only sites set to "always trust" are the Macromed folder and a folder for an online game I play that uses Flash (which doesn't work there, either.)

Global Notifications: alerts me weekly, if it matters.

Protected Content Playback: has not been reset during all this craziness

Website Privacy: always deny (except YouTube)

Website Storage: here's a problem. I keep setting it to 1MB, but it always resets to zero. However, on sites I specified, it leaves the storage capacity at 10MB, where I set it.

    Peer Assisted Networking: always ask.

Now your Flash modules look consistent.

Have you gone through the http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/837/cpsid_83739.html page?

I earlier had another site listed at the bottom of that page, but someone has removed it! It contained a lot more things to check when the sound is missing. I will have to find it again, and then I will get back to you.

Here is the site that I mentioned earlier: http://www.codecguide.com/fix_for_flash_sound_problems.htm

With the help of this list, almost all sound problems have been fixed in the past.

Firefox MAY have a plugin for Flash Player.  If not, I would try google for a solution.

The problem I had, wherever it was, affected both Firefox and IE.  Since I didn't use the codec tweak, mess with Quick Time, or make any changes to the Flash settings, I'm pretty sure it was solved by deleting the screwed up folders and allowing Flash to recreate them when it launched.

Using Firefox's plugin didn't help, but the help is appreciated!

In the last couple of days I have downloaded Flash Player 10.1.82.76 onto Vista Home Premium 32 bit. Every thing looks OK except FaceBook FarmVille and Frointer Ville are now in little windows not allowing all the buttons of the games to be visible. FP 10 worked fine ! Can I somehow go back to Flash Player 10 ? Where is there a download option ? I would not have downloaded 10.1 had I known it was in beta !!!    Help please

For drinkport: Just a real quick answer for you, Flash Player vs 10.1.82.76 is not a beta. This is an Update to the release of 6/10/10.

Please start your own thread, as this one is not about Facebook and their games.

Hi, Well all of your Flash files for IE and FF are correct. You said the add on for IE is Shockwave Flash. Go back to Tools, Manage add ons to Toolbars & Extensions. Look down into the middle left for "Show"(very light text) Click on All Add Ons

and see if "Shockwave Flash Object" is listed and enabled. There is a "Shockwave Flash" that is the Control for Shockwave Player, but that is separate from Flash Player. I just want to be sure you have the one for Flash Player also.

I want to understand the sequence of what has been done. You had FF vs 3.6.8, then you Uninstalled the old version of Flash Player and Installed the latest version 10.1.82.76. Then you experienced audio issues. You then Uninstalled QT and RP with Revo. Then you used Abexo and WinASO's Registry Cleaner. Is this correct?

Was it after this that you Uninstalled and Installed Flash Player again, along with Shockwave Player?

If you would, please go to Add/Remove and post back all Adobe programs Installed and also any and all add ons in the IE browser that are Adobe program related. Check in Toolbars & Extensions and all 4 categories under "Show"

Also what Anti-Virus program are you using? Have you made any changes as Uninstalling and Installing a different one since you first started experiencing this audio issue?  What are the add ons related to the Anti-Virus in the IE add ons?

I would rather concentrate on the IE browser first, gets confusing to add FF to the mix at the moment, if that is ok with you.

    Thanks,

All righty, then, here we go.

The actual sequence of events was that I first noticed no sound from Flash.  I hadn't done anything on my own other than word processing or web browsing, then suddenly no sound.  I assume something was tweaked during automatic updates of either Windows or one of the other programs I had installed.

I uninstalled QuickTime first, as I know that likes to take over Windows' settings for itself.  That didn't resolve the problem, so I uninstalled RealPlayer, which was the only other application I could imagine as being conflicted with Flash.  Windows Media Player 11 was the only player application left.

I used Revo Uninstaller on both applications and ran my registry cleaners both times.  Following both uninstallations, I had hoped the settings would revert to Flash, but they didn't, so I uninstalled and cleaned out Flash, too.  I downloaded Flash Player and installed it with both browsers closed (I saved the file in my Downloads folder and executed the installer from there so the browsers wouldn't interfere.)  However...even after getting the message that the download was successful, IE does not show that Adobe Flash Player is installed.  It shows only Shockwave Flash.

That was as close to a clean install as I could get, and it didn't work.

In the "Add/Remove Programs" window, I have Acrobat 9 Pro, Adobe Download Manager, Adobe Flash Player 10 Plugin, Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX, and Adobe Shockwave Player 11.5.  There are no other Adobe programs installed.

IE's add-ons for Adobe are as follows:

    SmartSelectClass

    PDF Conversion Toolbar

    PDF Link Helper

    PDF

    PDF Reader

    Shockwave Flash Object

    Shockwave ActiveX Control

    get_atlcom Class

    ...and all show "enabled."

As far as the antivirus, I've been using Avast for the last five years and the most recent update to the program (excluding definitions) was about three weeks prior to the audio issue with Flash.  I also use Spybot and Ad-Aware, but only the Spybot add-ons are listed.  There's nothing showing for Avast or Ad-Aware.

I think that's everything you wanted, but if you need more info, let me know.

And thanks in advance for your help!

Hi, thank you for that complete information. It makes my review of what is going on much easier and that is what I have just finished doing, reviewed and made notes. I see several issues and after a quick late lunch, I'll post back to you some things that need taken care of. I agree that a Windows Update or an Update from one of the other programs most likely set off the chain reaction. What I plan to do is eliminate the conflicts that I see and we'll start with the easiest and work our way to the others.

    Thanks,
