Flash Player 9 not working on XP Home ed

We have two accounts on our Windows XP Home SP2 machine. Both have
computer administrator rights. The first account created can us
e the flash player with no problem. The second account cannot. When you
go to a website, you are prompted to install the player.
It installs successfully. When you return to the site that prompted the install, it
prompts again. I have restarted, uninstalled,
reinstalled, removed the safe entries from the registry. Nothing is working.

We are running Version: 9,0,45,0.#

When I test the flash player it says it is installed.

I have compared the securities settings on the first account to the one on the
second, they are the same.

I have upgraded from IE 6 to IE7. Didn't fix it, reinstalled after the upgrade,
still doesn't work properly.

I verified that the security settings for IE and they were as recommended by
your website.

I am at a loss, any suggestions/fixes would be appreciated

You asked, "What e-mail address would you like a response sent to?"

Why are you asking for my email if you all ready said that you tried to send me an email with attachments?

I recently downloaded IE7.0. I then had difficulty running video content on MSN.com. I contacted MSN support and was told to uninstall and then reinstall Macromedia Flash. This was successful.

However, I have 3 accounts set up, running Windows Xp Pro. Only one of my accounts can run video content on MSN.com. Whenever another of my accounts trys MSN displays a message and a link that I need to download Macromedia Flash.

I have the latest version of Flash 9,0,45,0.

What can I do to restore Flash video content so that I can see videos on MSN.com?

FlashStrated2's problem was due to a corrupt Windows System Registry. We fixed this by running Microsoft’s SubInACL. After the registry was fixed, Flash Player installed on all accounts. If you have identified that your registry may be damaged, please read the following technote:

    http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=fb1634cb

It is important that you follow the instructions. For step 2 be sure to Download and Install SubInACL.EXE to your desktop. Dont just download the SubInACL to your desktop, INSTALL it on the desktop.

Note: Both SubInACL.exe and reset.cmd need to be in the same directory (both on the desktop is best).

To help you identify problems with your system regisry, please read this technote:

Warning! The following solution involves the Windows System Registry. Editing or manipulating the registry incorrectly can result in serious system damage which may require reinstallation of the operating system. If you are not comfortable editing the registry, then take your system to a professional. If you choose to proceed, then it is essential that you create a complete system backup and a Windows System Restore Point before proceeding. Darren is correct. The problem I had was with the SubInAcl.msi file that you downlowd from Microsoft Download Center in Step 1.

Download SubInAcl from Microsoft to fix permission issues that prevent the Flash Player installation The link takes you a a webpage with instructions on downloading SubInAcl.

Step 1 instructs you to download SubInAcl.msi file from Microsoft Download Center

I downloaded it to my desktop and double-clicked SubInAcl.msi to launch the Installer.

THIS IS WHERE THE PROBLEM OCCURRED.

Instead of writing SubInAcl.exe to my desktop it wrote it to the following directory on my PC: c:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools.

I proceeded to step 3 and downloaded the reset.zip file to my Desktop from adobe.com

I ran reset.zip and unpacked the reset.cmd file to my desktop.

Next I turned off everything that was running and double-clicked reset.cmd to execute the SubInAcl tool

BECAUSE SubInAcl.exe was installed in this directory c:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools on my PC, INSTEAD OF ON MY DESKTOP, when I ran the reset.cmd program, it coulnd not launch SubInAcl.exe. I got error messages in my windows\System32\cmd.exe window (black screen, white text) with the following message text: "subinacl is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file" the text repeated several times.

After only seconds, I did get the "Press any key to continue . . " message when the reset.cmd application was finished processing (Step 11).

If you get the same "subinacl is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file" message do a Search on your PC for the file "SubInAcl.exe". If you locate it then move it to your desktop and try running the reset.cmd again before proceeding to step 12.

Installing the SubInAcl fix is not for the faint of heart. The instructions do not indicate that the SubInAcl.exe file may end up on this directory by default: c:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools. So make sure to save SubInAcl.exe to your Destop before launching reset.cmd

Darren does indeed deserve all the kudos expressed on these boards for his selfless assistance to many users here, present company included.

I hope that my experience may help others to a successful resolution with less frustration and exasperation.

    Cheers!

    Hi FlashStrated2,

“Why the heck can one of my user Accounts install and see Flash content but none of my user accounts can?”

I would bet that your Windows System Registry is corrupted.

The instructions work, but you have to follow them correctly. Please see the following thread and if you have trouble following the instructions, find my personal email and I will help walk you through them.

Hi Darren, I was unable to import the registry key. I got the error that it "cannot import (name of location I saved it in) Shockwave Flash.ShockwaveFlash.9reg Error accessing the registry.

By the way, I reinstalled Flash and I have the same experience as before. However, today, in the two profiles with Flash problems in IE7 I can not view the Flash Site of the Day (the Sony Spiderman 3 one). I can view it fine on the other profile and in all the profiles in Firefox. I can view yesterday's site of the day (the Green Turtle race or whatever it was) on all profiles in both browsers. So there is something that some sites are checking for that isn't being found correctly.

Are the other user accounts restricted users or power users or do they have admin rights.

judygr64 please contact me via my personal email support_flash@hotmail.com

This would help me diagnose the issue and when we figure it out, we can post the resolution on this forum.

judygr64 describes the exact same problem that I am experiencing. I'm running Xp Pro however.

I tried importing the shockwave.flash.9 key. It didn't work and in fact after running it and following the instructions for my 2 users who can't run Flash Player, I lost it on my user too. All my users are Admins. Only one user can run Flash Player on IE7.

I actually created a Windows restore point before I edited the Registry. Good thing too because I was able to restore Flash Player capabilities for my only profile that actually works!

BTW I also tried the SubInACL solution provided on another thread here to no avail.

If you figure out the fix, please post it to this thread as I have subscribed to it.

    Cheers!

    Hi judygr64,

Thanks for providing all the detail. On the two user accounts that are not working properly, please import the following key into the system registry:

    http://www.supportflash.com/ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.9.zip

Warning: The following solution involves the Windows System Registry. Editing or manipulating the registry incorrectly can result in serious system damage which may require re-installation of the operating system. If you are not comfortable editing the registry, then take your system to a professional. If you choose to proceed, then it is essential that you create a complete system backup and a Windows System Restore Point before proceeding. Adobe Systems cannot be held responsible for damage resulting from this information.

    1. Unzip the ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.9 key
    2. Run the Flash Player uninstaller - download from here http://www.adobe.com/go/tn_14157
    3. Select Start >run type in ‘regedit’
    4. Select File > import
    5. Import the ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.9 key
    6. Install the Flash Player from here: http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer

Please let me know how this works for you.

    Hello.
I have the same problem in my computer. With some accounts flash player works but it does not work with other account.
I tried to do your instructions but it does not work. I cannot modify those registry keys, even I cannot import the new one. I get the same error.
    Regards.

I had the same problem with my Home XP, using Internet Explorer.

After hours of installing and uninstalling, I came to the conclusion it was installed okay, but that there was another problem. (I did not test it, but I would bet that if you install Flash9, and then create a new user, it will work perfectly on the websites it does not work with for present user accounts).

What finally got mine to work was to do a search (start, search), the word Flash in all or part of name, C:\ drive assuming this is your correct drive, move advanced options (check the first three). You'll get a long list.

Look for folders with the name Flash Player. You should be looking for a "Flash PLayer" folder under your account name. For example. C:\Documents and Settings\account name\application data\macromedia\

Delete this folder, and do it for any other accounts you have. Do not delete the folder Flash under System 32.

Flash9 worked perfect for me after these deletions. In looking in the the Flash Player folder there is a list of websites you have visited. I suspect there are settings in this list that cause a problem for Flash9.

Once deleted, you can open your browser and everything should be okay.

Flash9 will create s new Flash Folder under each user account as you log in as that user.

This worked for me. I hope it does for others with the same problem.

Darren, thanks for your response. I was away over the weekend so just got to check this info now. Perhaps with all the info I provide you can provide a solution:

Just a reminder, I have 3 profiles, 1 working correctly (I think) with all Flash sites, 2 others working okay on some with IE7 (Windows XP home) and fine on Firefox.

    1. Registry keys:

On the profile that works okay, the registry keys look as expected, they are all there, you can expand them, click on them etc.

On the 2 profiles that don't work quite right, the registry keys you ask to check are all there, but they have no plus sign, you can't expand them and you can't select, view or delete them.

This is true for all of these on those two profiles, even after I run the uninstaller and no flash is installed.

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.1
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.3
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.4
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.5
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.6
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.7
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.8
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.9

    2. If you read my previous post that I had in this thread, I mentioned that I had tried to follow all your instructions and could not delete this file: Flash9.ocx

I should add this is true if I run it in safe mode, as adminitrator or in each and every one of the profiles individually. When I run the installer, it always show on the "details" info that this file is to be deleted on reboot, but it never deletes.

Like the registry key, you can't delete this file, change the permissions, drag to the recycle bin. This is true when logged on as administrator in safe mode.

I hope you have some advice for how to delete this file. It seems that it and the problem with the registry key are related. Help please!

Thanks so much for your asssistance.

Darren, I should have added, on the 2 profiles that are not working properly (even though Flash 9.0.45.0 is installed and is working on some sites) when I try to select any of the registry keys you had me check I get the following an Error Opening Key dialog box with the following message: Cannot open Shockflash Shockwave Flash1 (or whateve number I've checked) Error while opening key.
