Question

Flash Player 9 won't install on Mac OSX(PC)

I got a prompt on a website saying that I needed to download FlashPlayer 9 and plug-in. I downloaded the installer and tried to install the application. When I get the test page I also get the same prompt telling me I need the plug-in and taking me back to the page where you download the installer. In other words, I'm going in circles. Something is preventing the application from installing. And most web pages have cube questionmark icons where I should be viewing flash content.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

yes Dailafing, I did that. it DOES work in an alternate loggon. Is that what you are asking us to confirm?

But I don't want to work there, my files and work are in my original admin loggon. I believe if I was to start working in the secondary loggin account the same way I did in my primary, I would eventually end up having the same problem after updates and such.

Luckily for me, I googled the heck out of the internet (for weeks) and finally found the diagnosis for my particular problem on another forum on another website (posted above previously).

What you propose is a clean and quick resolve if ya absolutely, positively want to surf the web without limitations of content. (which beats the heck out of the alternative.... NOT) :)

Let us know if you figure out why your admin Flash install does not work. 28 tech years? I have all the confidence in the world that you will be someone who figures it out (if it is not what I describe that has worked for me)

    Good luck. :)

I'm have a major headache getting flash player 9 to work...By the looks of this thread and a couple others this has been a headache fore a lot of people -- both Mac and PC -- for a while. I've done the permissions fix, I've unistalled and reinstalled about 50 times. can someone PLEASE tell me a concise fix to this problem. I'm on a mac, using OSx.2.8, I use mainly firefox as my browser. Surely after all this time there must be a solution. Some of these threads originated almost a year ago. I'm really fed up.

Did you go in and look at your Quicktime settings in the system preferences? I have posted the directions many time above.

This may not work for you, but I didn't see that you tried it in your post. It COMPLETELY fixed my problem. Amazing how happy one gets when Flash is working again. :)

    That's just my two cents.
    Good luck!!

ok, New user - New solution
Again, same old story....Pulling hair out, taking up alchoholisum...

Been a computer tech for 28 years, and still going...Something mad i thaught of trying is loggin out of my "Admin" profile, and logging in to the basic user account i have for my partner. I threw the installer for flash on to her desktop, and logged off....Switched to "Full Finder" mode, and started the install... Just went in verry quickly, and forwarded me to the "Succsessful install" page from adobe..

Now one more thing, i joind up just to say this, so please if you were in my shoes, do the same, it only takes 2-3mins. and let me know how this has helped you..

Thanks again, oh...PS im on an intel - Macbook pro, with os X 10.4.10

Dailafing's post was the key for me. I have an Intel iMac OSX 10.4.10. I too tried most or all the above (except getting into Terminal). Nothing.

I have four profiles (accounts) set up, and, after the above tip, was able to install FP9 on the one non-admin profile. But then I still couldn't complete the install on the primary admin profile, nor on the others.

So, I switched around - several times - which profile would be the admin and which ones wouldn't. I'd log out of the current 'admin' and into each newly 'standard' profile, and successfully complete the install. At the end, I re-established my original scheme of which profiles would be admin and which wouldn't. FP9 seems to run seamlessly on each profile now. But I had to do a separate install for each one.

    randymc,
re-install the os from archive. It fixes all problems, takes about 2 hours, and you don't lose any data. Installing from archive just resets your system files, seems to fix the un-fixable problems.
This is the advice I received at the "genius bar" at Tampa apple store.

I am having a similar problem but with a DELL XPS 710 PC. I go to update FLASH player and allow ActiveX control to run and then install. The splash screen (?) says it was successfully installed, but when I go to a site that requires FLASH it says I still need to install the update. So, I go back to the Adobe page to see if it is still indeed installed and it is not. I have tried to install three separate times with no luck. I bet I have spyware... my computer is filled to the gills and I am doing back-ups and cleaning PC as we speak. Any suggestions?

Here is a site I am trying to use the FLASH player with... I am attempting to make a FLASH badge for my puppy...
    http://www.dogster.com/badge/
When I click on "show my badge code" I get nothing.

    Thanks to all in advance!

woops, I left out the first sentence in my original post above: (thanks for the heads up)

"The settings in the Quicktime System Pref pane is different in the later OSX upgrades. In the pane, select the Advanced Tab. You will find a MIME settings button, click this. Open up each one of the settings. Two of them (Images, and Miscellaneous) have a selection for Flash. Deselect those two. After I did this and restarted Firefox, the problem went away."

I am just so glad it works!! :)

clarification though... you go to the systems preference panel and then go to quicktime then look for the mime button and make the changes.... had to hunt around a little to find the right spot...

Did you try this? I had the same problem. (I did all the permissions repairing mumbo jumbo and the "remove "this's" and "thats"......) I didn't have any problem installing Flash, no error messages or anything. Like you, it wasn't "staying" after installation.

THIS WORKED!!! BIG TIME!!!!!!!! IMMEDIATELY!! EASY!!

..... In the system preferences pane, select the Advanced Tab. You will find a MIME settings button, click this. Open up each one of the settings. Two of them ("Images", and "Miscellaneous") have a selection for Flash. Deselect those two. After I did this and restarted Firefox, the problem went away. (for me, it also went away in Safari, Opera and Netscape)

Sorry if after this, it doesn't work, I just hate to see people suffer like I did when this is such an easy and immediate fix.

    Good luck!

OK, I took my intel macbook to the local apple store to see what could be done to get flash plugin working again.
If repair permissions does not fix the problem, nor does change any quicktime settings, they suggested re-installing the OS from the original install dvd.

Use the "install and archive" option.

I did this, and flash is back again after a month since I updated to QuickTime 7.2.
This actually reverted QT 7.2 back to QT 7.0.4

Everything is working fine now, and I'm not about updated to QT 7.2 anytime soon.

i've been attempting to get on yahoo messenger but since i don't have flash player(currently i have falsh player 7 courtesy of MX flash 2004 from school). so now my global communications part is stalled as it is because of this error problem part. in addition, yahoo messenger is my only way to communicate with my friends and cousins who doesn't live here in the united states. so can anyone have a suggestion what do i need to do? i have attempted almost 10 times to log-in on the messenger but since i dont have flash player 9, i cannot log in. also, my hard drive had been fixed earlier this week and because of this, after i re-installed my adobe software(i.e. illustrator and PS), i can't log in at yahoo messenger just because i dont have flash player 9. YM also saves me phone bill at the same time, too!

Sox, I haven't fixed it, and am ready to take it back to the apple store...
I've spent literally days trying to get it working, it's been almost a month since I ran software update and lost flash upon restarting.
I've tried all the advice I could find from a lot of message boards, maybe a dozen different ways. I have not yet tried to revert QuickTime back by re-installing from the install disk.
    See:
    http://weblogs.java.net/blog/fabriziogiudici/archive/2007/07/the_falling_myt.html

I'm not running any browsers under Rosetta.
My specs: Intel 1.83 GHz Macbook, os 10.4.10 with 1GB RAM
Software update is all good, no new updates to be installed.

Does not work under Safari, Firefox 2, Camino, and Opera.
