flash player crashes internet explorer and firefox

i installed a remanufactured motherboard and power supply after a voltage surge.  i installed windows xp pro, norton 360 ver 4, registry mechanic, adobe reader, and adobe flash player.  everything works fine but the flash player crashes internet explorer and firefox.  i've uninstalled and reinstalled several times with no luck.  i've even reinstalled windows twice.  the flash player keeps crashing.  i tried numerous other things like turning off html 1.1, turning off hardware accelerator, etc,  but no luck. all the drivers are the latest and xp is current on updates.  here's a belarc profile of the system:  it says sp2 but i've updated that to sp 3

Hi, Ok, just to recap. We have XP/SP3, IE8 & FF 3.6-- & Norton. Test site for both browsers passed and FP is vs 10.1.102.64.

That tells me that Flash Player is working correctly. The website/video issues is another thing.

First, because McAfee was Installed and even tho you removed it from Add/Remove, files are still there. They can conflict with any new Anti-Virus program that is then Installed.

    You need to do this:

    McAfee Removal Tool and Instructions

    http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507&lc=1033&pf=1

Follow Steps 1 & 2 only, Close all browsers before Running the Tool. Allow it to completely finish.
When you receive the CleanUp Successful, then be sure to Reboot(restart) your computer.

Let me know when you have that done.

    Thanks,

    eidnolb

ok   here's more mystery.  i just uninstalled and reinstalled flash player using the adobe uninstaller and rebooting after each step.  aqlso installed latest java.  i started looking at videos and here are the ones that worked: you tube

                                                                                           imdb

                                                                                           hulu

                                                                                           ebaumsworld

here are the ones that didn't work:    yahoo

                                                                                           msn

                                                                                           reuters

here are the ones that partially worked: the blaze (works on videos that originate from you tube, but not from news stories)

bing (work on videos from their video section - entertainment type, but not from news videos)

the common thing here seems to be that news type videos crash and entertainment type don't.  also videos seem more likely to crash on internet portals like yahoo

Hi, I was getting ready to sign off but just a couple of questions. The list of Critical & Important Windows Updates, were these Installed?

Are you using McAfee and Norton?

If you Uninstalled McAfee, did you Uninstall only from Add/Remove or did you in addition use the McAfee Removal Tool?

Use both browsers and test here:

You should be able to see the Flash logo animation and what version of Flash Player is displayed(for each browser)

Is IE still vs 6 and is FF(Firefox) vs 3.6?

    http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

    Thanks,

good morning,  thanks for the reply last night.

here is the current belarc report.  there is an update that says reinstall but when i tried, it said i wasn't using the program it applied to.  apparently it is for ie6.  so now i think everything is up to date.  i'm only using norton. the mcafee was installed one time when i reinstalled flash player. it came with the player and i didn't uncheck the box. i uninstalled it using add/remove in the control panel and the mcaffee uninstall program came up.  i tried both browsers on the flash page and the version on both was 10.1.102.64. something else weird is that sometimes the videos on you tube work but never on portals like you tube or bing or msn.
