Flash player download and install fails in IE8 and FF

Last Sat, went to a website and got a messege: Need AFP ver 8 or higher--download. The shortcut @ Adobe would not download the file, although I had AFP10 already and had been using it.

Followed all the instructions given by eidnolb with the download/unistall/reboot/reboot/install AX/install PI and found all the files both in windows32/macromed/flash and plugins active @ FF, IE as well as recognized by adobe.com/products/flash/about. Went to BOTH browsers and STILL no Flash...BTW Safari does not work either...

Any suggestions at this point???

I spent a good part of the day yesterday getting the problem solved:

I did an upgrade from Vista sp2 to Win 7 ultimate 32-bit and immediately afterward, everything worked great. It took me a couple of days to get upgrades to several programs and it seems that one of these programs was blocking Javascripts and AFP, although I have no idea how.

The website(s) I had trouble with are all "respectable" sites. I first noticed it at Speedtest.net when I tested my network connection(s) at 2.4 GHz and then at 5 GHz and I could not run the test. All I got was a messege to "upgrade" Flash to ver 8 or better, but the download link at Adobe would not work.

I then tried my e-mail @ MSN.com and could not log-in and even as I found an alternate way to log-in, I could not click on my e-mails to read them. Any website that used Flash would give me an error re. the plug-in (Apple, HP, Hulu or any streaming for that matter, etc). Initially I thought it was a Flash issue and that is when I found your instructions for the download.

I followed the instructions and all the files pointed to AFP 10.0.45., Plugins were installed and enabled in the browsers and Adobe recognized it as such so I thought it had to be something else...

My problem was solved by removing Skype, the Skype toolbar and repairing the iTunes install. I also disabled the Computer Assoc. toolbar from all browsers. After a reboot--voila!! Both JavaScripts and AFP started working AGAIN in FF and Chrome without reinstalling (with the exception on IE8, which I had to run the *.AX AFP install again).

I agree with several of eidnolb posts that this was not necessarily a Flash issue but other programs conflicting and hope that any other soul running around pulling their hair out will find this helpful...

Thanks to all for your responses, especially to you eidnolb!!!

Hi jovan, wow, what a merry go round, but not as much fun:-) Very glad you were able to resolve it all. There are some that go thru so much of that but still don't get it resolved. So frustrating for sure.

Skype is a known trouble maker, but if wanted, the advice is to uninstall and make sure the latest version is installed.

CA also has little tricks when trying to disable when needed.

Not sure which thread you read of my opinions, but being on this side of the fence that is what I have seen and experienced.

    Thanks for the mention.

Right now, it appears the Patch Tuesday updates from MS (4/13/10) are creating problems. I just, well I still have a MS forum up and still reading. A couple of other forums are discussing them also. So if you haven't installed any yet, you may want to see what all is involved and if any particular OS is involved.

    eidnold-

    i uninstalled kaspersky

reinstalled adobe flash in FF. tested using a youtube video. works fine!

attempted to play same video in IE, but it asked for an "upgrade" ??

so i clicked on the upgrade link back to adobe flash & works fine. strange.

i re-started my pc & expected my usual problem to return- but no. flash is working in both FF & IE.

out of curiousity i peeked into my control panel & looked under "programs" & "flash" is not listed.

when you look in "Adobe" it is still sez "empty", even though the  Adobe reader 9 is listed.

what now? i don't wanna run without kaspersky or similar protection.

another problem: without kaspersky, outlook will not open properly. i suspect a Trojan in outlook that kaz was somehow keeping at bay?

thanks for your input but this is frustrating.

Hi jovan, If I understand what you have written correctly, you clicked on a Flash Player download link at a website, after

you had version10 installed and had been using it?

The instructions that you followed as you listed was done AFTER you attempted this download at the website? And may I assume Flash Player was working before you tried to download from this site?

Always be wary of any website that says you need Flash Player version 8 or "higher". That ususally means they don't support the latest version and probably not any "higher" than 9 if that.

I think you may want to post back your Flash files that are installed in the Flash folder and make sure they are correct.

The IE files will have the version number, but the NPSWF files will not. You will need to right click on each of them and then click on Properties to obtain the version numbers. I need that info.

Using IE, check all add ons and post back if the Shockwave Flash Object is listed as Flash10e.ocx and enabled.

Using FF, check in plug-ins for the SWF vs 10.0.45.2 plug-in and that it is enabled.

    Thanks,

    eidnolb

P.S. what operating system are you using? 64bit?

may i both offer a suggestion and hijack at the same time? i experienced the same. i turn off my kaspersky temporarily and was able to both download and use flash in FireFox, and also would play in IE.

    however:

upon a later re-boot, same problem occured.

perhaps in your instance a succesful downlaod after turning off whatever protection or firwall you are using may work permanently in your instance.

anyone else with better suggestions? thanks in advance.

once again, 1,000 pardons for the partial hijack, jovan.
