Flash Player has stopped working

Recently my Flash Player has stopped working in both Firefox 3.5.7 and IE 8.0.6001.18792 on Windows XP. I have no other browsers installed.

If I go to http://feefifaux.net or http://prestonsbeat.com in either browser I get a message saying that I need to install Flash Player 9 despite the fact that I have Flash Player 10.0.42.34 and Flash Player ActiveX 10.0.42.34 installed. I have tried removing them and re-installing them. Other people can hear/see this content and I used to be able to hear/see it.

Firefox add-ons have all been removed. IE addons have all been disabled. Still it doesn't work. Other people can hear the embedded audio. I used to be able to hear it. When I install the player it says the install was successful and I can see the animation on that page but I still can't hear these audio clips.

I amn using Windows Firewall and Avira Anti-Vir free edition, which is my only TSR.

This may have been triggered by a recent Firefox upgrade, which seems to coincide with when the problem started.

Let me just say that the problem turned out to be the script (Wordpress Audio Player plugin) that I was using. The script/plugin has been updated, and if you scroll almost all the way down you will find the answer...

Oh, I thought that as a a "reply to the original post" this would be at the top of the page and might save somebody some time, but not if you are in "flat view".

I think the reply to the original post means if you want to address the content in the original post rather than another

post.

If you want you can always say see Post #40, 42 & 49 for the solution.

Yes it does mean that but you can choose whether you want to view this board in threaded view or flat view. In threaded view it would show as an offshoot of the original post but in flat view it shows chronologically.

Joachim does indeed have a point. I've now looked at the code on those sites and it isn't well laid out at all, I've done Cobol and C and if I handed it a bunch of code like that to my teacher, I'd've had it handed back to me after being put through the shredder! Me, not the code!!

Can you play stuff on YouTube or other streaming sites? Most of them use .FLV or .SWF files and they're all Flash files. I DO have another idea, which in all seriousness I'll run past Eidnolb first - I'm not being sarky that time, I respect her and you and want to get you up and running with Flash the same as she does, it's just we've got two different ways of working. I'm very much a 'suckit'n'see' guy. She's a careful research before you do a thing kinda girl. I respect her for that, honestly I do, I just love trying things out. If they don't work, fine, at least you've tried it! That's me.

If you can see YouTube/Veoh/MegaVideo stuff, I'd say the prob's with those two sites more than with you, same as Joachim's saying. I should have thought of that, I'm to blame there, I just got carried away trying things out. If you can't, I'll run my latest genius idea (I wish!) past Eidonolb and see what she thinks of it.

I'm not into flame wars either.

If it works everywhere except on two sites, Ockham's razor says there is something wrong with the code on those two sites. Presumably they do some sort of version check that does not only trigger when Flash Player is to old, but also when it is to new. Or using some undocumented feature that got disabled in a recent update.

I tried looking at the Javascript code used to embed the Flash movies, but that code is scary. No comments, no identation, no discernible structure, just a giant blob of code. If you use this code yourself somewhere, I would recommend ripping it out and replacing it with something maintainable.

Thanks Jochem. The code is coming from a Wordpress plugin. The strange thing is that I have asked the two clients if their sites are working for them, and they have both said that they are, which indicated to me that the problem is on my end. It seems like you were not able to play it either, and apparently Chris could not play it, so maybe my clients simply are not using the latest version of Flash Player and that might explain why it still works for them.

At any rate, worst case scenario is that the Wordpress plugin is at fault and I will have to find another solution for delivering that content and hope that the clients will like it. I won't be able to bill for the time if they feel that something I did doesn't work. Plugins are both a strength and a weakness of Wordpress because the plugin developers sometimes do not keep their plugins up-to-date as the world around them changes.

Eidnolb, just FYI I didn't intentionally do anything to drive you away and I appreciate the help.

So, I decided to search Google to see if anyone else is writing about problems using the Wordpress Audio Player plugin and Flash Player 10, and found this article:

It seems like the answer may be that my Flash Player is working fine per se, and that it is a conflict between the plugin and the player.

And lo and behold I just logged into the WP admin of one of the two sites, and there is a new version of the plugin available. After upgrading the plugin I no longer get the message about upgrading Flash Player. I get nothing at all!

At any rate, it looks like I have to do more research into this plugin and perhaps find some other way of delivering this content.

Thanks to everyone for their help. If I find an answer to make the plugin work, I will post it here.

bites the dust - sigh!!

Ah, well.

What I'm gonna do for my next trick is post everything I've got in my About:Plugins Firefox page right here. Because Flash is working just fine in my Firefox and someone who knows a bit more than I do - which isn't hard, let's face it - might be able to spot the difference between my plug-ins and your plug-ins and be able to deduct why it's working on my FF and not yours.

Just incase it makes a difference - it might - my version is 3.5.7

Right. Here's the post. I couldn't spot any obvious differences (that I could see would MAKE a difference if you see what I mean) but one of the gurus here might be able to.
