flash player issue

I'm using a Macbook Sierra 10.6 and safari 12.0.2. I have uninstalled and reinstalled my flash player, but when I check to see if it's on my computer thru the helpx.adobe, it says I don't have it. I have checked the box in Safari under preferences and plug-ins. I started all of this because I kept getting the little question marks in the blue boxes on some web pages. I do have those websites marked as "on" in Safari for Adobe Flash Player. Why can I not seem to get it downloaded? In my applications folder, it shows a rectangle icon that says flash player with a shortcut symbol by it, but I don't see the red F, even though I saw it when I downloaded it. Any ideas? Please don't tell me I need to upgrade my operating system as I'm running some old software for work and Apple suggested I not upgrade until I'm not using it any longer. Thank you!!

    At this point, Flash Player requires MacOS 10.10 or higher.  Apple deprecates APIs in the operating system, which requires us to make changes that make it difficult to remain infinitely backward compatible.

    Flash Player is a browser plug-in (there's a standalone Flash Projector as well), so there's nothing that would typically show up in Applications.  It kind of makes me wonder if you were tricked into downloading something that wasn't Flash Player.  We shouldn't create an entry in Applications, but you *should* see a Flash Player icon under System Preferences.

    So... setting aside the possibility for the moment that you accidentally downloaded and installed malware, you're basically stuck with uninstalling and reinstalling Flash Player, then trying to enable it in Safari.

    I'm pretty puzzled about this shortcut that you're talking about, though.  Could you share a screenshot?  If you can right/option click and get the file info window to show up, that would be super interesting to see.

    Also, you may want to think seriously about dual-booting for that legacy application.  Something along these lines: https://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/mac-software/dual-boot-mac-3659676/

    When you're using software tasked with processing potentially malicious content (your browser, OS and Flash top that list), you really want to be using current versions.

    There might be Apple-approved virtualization solutions that would make this experience a little better (e.g. you could use them simultaneously), but I'm not sure off the top of my head.
