flash player update problem

I have been trying to install the flashplayer update on my Apple MacBook Pro but it stops at 50% and says close SAFARI.  SAFARI IS SHUT DOWN??????  WHAT NEXT?

Check with the Activity Monitor that it's not running in the background.
