Question

Flash Player verrrry slow.

This problem has been going on for at least a month now, and I've asked numerous different places without fixing the problem so far.

Firefox asked me to update to the newest release before the 4.0 beta (I apologize, I can't remember the version). I went to Farmville after updating and noticed that it was very laggy and taking a long time for my mouse to respond to my clicks. After this, I have been having all sorts of problems with anything that uses Flash. In Tinychat, sometimes I'll be typing and the words will take a long time to appear after I've finished typing, they appear one letter at a time, slowly.

I also apologize because I can't remember everything I've done in the past month to fix this problem, because I've tried a lot of different things. The ones I've tried the most are:

Uninstalling Flash, restarting, reinstalling Flash.

Updating my drivers

Turning off hardware acceleration

Using a different browser (Safari, tried Internet Explorer but a lot of ActiveX stuff, I just didn't really bother. Problem persisted in Safari.)

And a bunch of combinations of the above. Needless to say, NOTHING has worked and the problem persists. I will add that yesterday I was at a friends house, and for whatever reason, without trying any of these methods, Farmville was back to normal again. I asked if it was the internet speed, but my friend said likely not. I just thought I'd add that in case it means anything.

Operating System: Windows 7 64 bit

Web Browser: Firefox 4.0beta 1 and 2(it says Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; Windows NT 6.0; WOW64; rv:2.0b2) Gecko/20100720 Firefox/4.0b2 but I'm not sure if its 32 or 64 bit.) , Safari 5.0.1 (7533.17.8)

Flash Player Version: WIN 10,1,82,76 (Also says "Debug Player: No")

I hope that's enough info, but I'll be happy to supply more if asked.

I agree with the last two posts. Flash 10.x is the issue here.

We have all updated our drivers, uninstalled, rebooted, reinstalled flash, checked security/browser settings.

It  doesn't matter what we users do on our end, the issue remains.  Therefor, as logic dictates, the issue is witht he program, not the  user.

Adobe has ignored our requests for any kind of response. I  am not about to pay them for me to call and bitch at them and not get  anything fixed.

eidnolb: I see you helping alot of users throughout this forum, and as much as I appreciate and respect what you are trying to do, what I said above seems to be the running diagnosis. Flash 10.x is resource hogging and glitchy. Adobe needs to read their own forums and fix the issue.

I also agree with several of the preceeding posts, but my experience of slow Firefox problems goes back to early this year (2010) when I installed 3.5.7 update.  I don't want to drag this thread into a sage about FF issues, but I am now concluding that the real cause of high CPU loading (often 50% almost constantly) comes down to the Flash Player plugin.

Admittedly I do hammer FF - I typically run 18 windows, and around 200 tabs at any one time.  These are regularly reloaded using a session manager.  A good few of these tabs are auto-refreshing types which include Flash content - such as news websites.  However, the majority of the tabs are passive content - they simple load, and stay loaded (for quick reference).

When FF is running well, CPU usage is quite low.  However, every so often, FF goes (what I call) "Modal".  That is it locks itself into a mode, where CPU usage sits around 50%, and according to Process Explorer overall CPU becomes pretty much a flat line.  Whilst FF is in this behaviour mode, it struggles to update the auto-refreshing tabs, and is generally unresponsive to mouse-overs on the tabs themselves, often unresponsive to mouse-scrolling (scroll wheel but not scroll bar at the side), and very slow to switch tabs on a given window.  There is no problem switching windows!

Now, to diagnose this, I have been closing down most of my plugins, and observing.  Today it started going modal again, and I finally disabled "Shockwave Flash" plugin.  [current version installed is 10.0.32.18, and still FF 3.5.7]  Without doing anything else, my CPU load went down to normal, and FF came out of its lethargy.

So, it seems to me that the Flash Player plugin might be the underlying culprit.  I am aware that my FF is not up to date.  I have another machine with 3.6.x on it, and I have to say I am not happy with the plugin-container approach, and am therefore holding back on updating this machine.  Suffice to say though, that my report shows that the problem did not start, and is probably not necessarily related to the 3.6.x releases of Firefox.

Interested to hear other peoples experiences with this.

I completely agree with the last guy; ever since Flash 10.1 update there has been an issue with a large number of systems, and it goes hand in hand with the new resource hogging plugin-container (for FF, or whatever simultaneous browser process is created). It took some intense forum browsing to convince me that plugin-container wasn't malware.

Its all quite predictable to say update your drivers blah blah, I've heard that before a million times and so I do. However, this glitchy slowness is reported on so many different system setups its impossible to identify a particular issue and anyhow if its an issue of drivers then how comes simple flash items worked without using 50percent cpu up until a few months back.

The only thing I can think is roll back to firefox 3.0 and flash 9, cos it weren't broke and didn't need fixing. Security my rear end, theres anti-firewall-virus a-gogo for that, I preffered when I didn't have to fullscreen everything to get half decent playback.

Someone at Adobe please help, you must have some awareness of this resource issue...or some explanation of the "plugin-container.exe" phenomenom

The same happened to me. I have no doubt this is due to Flash Player 10.1. The two web navigators I use, Firefox and Internet Explorer went way laggy the moment I updated Flash Player to version 10.1. This happens evry time I open up a page with Flash objects. While no pages with Flash objects are open, Windows Task Manager reports 85,000 K of memory use (Private Working Set) for iexplorer.exe and 96,500 K for firefox.exe, and less than 10% CPU usage each. As soon as I open up a page with Flash objects in Firefox, its memory usage escalates to 116,300 K plus163,300 K for a Flash related plugin-container.exe, which by itself consumes CPU work oscillating between 15% to 50%. This is the cause of the tremendous lags. Similar or even worse problems occur, when I open up one page with Flash objects in Internet Explorer. A second iexplorer.exe process starts and draws up to 895,000 K (regular processes like MS Word consume no more than 30,000 K) as well as 48% of CPU work. For all this reasons, I will uninstall Flash Player 10.1 and return to the last update of versión 9.x. Does anybody know how can I do that? In any case I suggest other users NOT to upgrade from Flah Player 9.x to 10.x.

Hi, With each browser that you have Installed, IE8, Firefox and Safari, test each one at this site. When you post back list whether you could see the animation and what version of Flash Player it tells you that you have. List each browser and the results separately.

    http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

Then go to C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash  Open Flash and post back all files listed. All files that are NPSWF, you will need to right click on to open and then click on Properties and post that back also.

List all Anti-Virus programs you have and any Anti-Spyware programs. Please include complete names and version numbers. Do any of these programs include a Firewall? If not, what Firewall do you use, other than Windows Firewall?

Also what Anti-Virus program did you have on your system before the one you have now and was it removed before you Installed the current one with any Removal Tool? Names of the program and version numbers also.

    Thanks,

Okay here are the results from the link you sent me:

Firefox: Yes, I can see the animation. Version 10,1,82,76

Safari: Yes, I can see the animation. You have version 10,1,82,76 installed

IE: Yep, animation. You have version 10,1,53,64 installed

When I go to the location you mentioned, I see:

    Flash10h.ocx

    FlashInstall

    flashplayer.xpt

    FlashUtil10h_ActiveX.dll

    FlashUtil10h_Activex

    FlashUtil10i_Plugin

    NPSWF32.dll

Properties of NPSWF32.dll - I don't know what part you're looking for, so I'll go to details. http://i35.tinypic.com/qoa8fk.png

Antivirus - It's avast version 5.0.594, and it has been avast for about 3 years without any problems at all. I don't think I use a firewall.

Hi thanks. You have  Flash Player vs 10.1.82.76 in FF and Safari. You have the previous version 10.1.53.64 in IE.

Now, using IE, go to Tools, Manage add ons to Toolbars & Extensions. You may have to check all categories and Show all add ons, but find Shockwave Flash Object..ActiveX Control and make sure it is Enabled. It should list also with that, Flash10h.ocx or vs 10.1.53.64.

Using each of the other browsers, in the plugin sections, find SWF vs 10.1.82.76 and make sure it is Enabled.

Then I would suggest that you make sure you have the latest definition updates from Avast.  Close all browsers and run a full scan with Avast.

That would be all for tonight:-)

    Thanks,
