FLASH PLAYER WILL NOT OPEN OR RUN - Vista 32-bit

Question

the flash player update will download but will not run.   It always did before and now nothing.  I have a vista 32 bit now what do I do????[moderator: added os version to title for clarity]

This usually happens when the OS doesn't support SHA256 digital signatures, which the installers now use. Vista with Service Pack 2 should support SHA256 digital signatures. If you have SP 2 installed, see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2763674/you-cannot-run-an-application-that-is-sig ned-with-a-sha-256-certificat for assistance. If you don't have SP 2 installed you'll need to upgrade to SP 2 or a newer OS.
