Flash Player won't install on Windows XP machine

I cannot install the latest Flash Player 10 on a Windows XP machine. I have worked my way through the Troubleshoot Flash Player installation instructions, which included:

  • removing old versions of Flash, restarting the PC
  • checked that I have a 32 bit machine
  • Installing with Flash Player Download, having disabled my Norton Anti-virus
  • Tried the manual installer

Each time the installation appears to work, and completes without any error messages, but Flash is not actually installed. It won't run, and when I checked the install it says that Flash is not present. I have done this about six times, with no joy. Any ideas?

Can you see the Flash animation at http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ and is there any version information displayed under it?

What do you have in C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash ?

What is your browser & version?

Hi, and thanks for the reply.

The animations are blank, with the dreaded red cross top left.

In that sub-directory I have the following files:

    Flash 10l.ocx

    FlashInstall.log

    FlashUtil10l_AciveX.dll

    FlashUtil10l_AciveX.exe

genuinst.exe (coloured blue for not acessed since 2006)

    install.log

KB923789.inf (coloured blue for not acessed since 2006)
