Flash Versions Compatible With FF 5.0.1

I am currently using Flash version 11.7.700.224 with Firefox 5.0.1 on Windows XP SP3.

https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

The above page says the current latest version is 17.0.0.134.  I click "System requirements" and the popup window says Firefox 17 or later.  If I click "View more system requirements" in the popup window, that page says Firefox 31 or later.

I have the same OS and Firefox version (XP SP3 and FF 5.0.1) on a secondary computer.  Yesterday I installed Flash 17.0.0.134 on that computer.  Then I visited a few sites with flash players.  They appear to be working OK.

So, what's the deal?  Is 17.0.0.134 compatible with FF 5.0.1, or will problems show up later?  If it's not compatible, what is the latest version of Flash that is?

    Hi,

Flash Player may work on Firefox 5, however, we do not develop for, not test with, Firefox 5.0.1.  If there are playback issues they will not be investigated nor fixed unless they also reproduce on a supported version of the browser.

I don't have the tech specs for Flash Player 11.7, but Firefox 5 was supported in Flash Player 11.6 and but not in Flash Player 11.8, so we dropped support for it in either 11.7 or 11.8.  However, both of those versions of Flash Player are old, no longer updated with security fixes and not recommended.  Mozilla probably doesn't recommend Firefox 5 anymore either (I know they no longer support it).  Unless there's some compelling reason to have Firefox 5 installed, I would upgrade to the latest version as well.

    Thanks for the response.

I stopped updating Flash when the system requirements said the updates needed a newer Firefox.

I use a Firefox plugin that is no longer being updated, and doesn't work on newer versions of Firefox.  The plugin is very important to me, and I have never found a comparable replacement.  I probably won't update Firefox as long as the plugin still works on the web.

Unfortunately, by running outdated versions of an operating system, browser and Flash, you leave yourself open to a significant risk of malware infection.  Firefox releases every six weeks, we release every four.  We're not targeting WinXP, or old Firefox versions, and in 2015, it takes bad actors about 1-2 weeks to reverse-engineer and deploy exploits against outdated plugins like Flash or the browser.  If you're not doing anything important with your machine (banking, healthcare, etc) then it's probably fine (you might be the foothold by which an attacker moves laterally to other machines inside your network), but otherwise, I'd recommend you seriously rethink your approach to updates, particularly with the software on your machine that processes untrusted content, like your browser.
