Flash9b.ocx crash once again

Hi, all

I'd really like to see an official message from Adobe concerning the issue with Flash9b.ocx crashing in IE. Surely they must have received a lot of messages from disgruntled users.

I work for an online newspaper and we have several hundred thousand page impressions every day. And for lots of users our front page causes the Flash player to crash. It's practically impossible to isolate which banner ad(s) that will lead to a crash.

My theory is that there are certain ActionScript commands that are handled in a different manner in the new player, while swfs that contain only animation will work.

re: ... And note that this will prevent you from viewing any content that requires Flash Player 9.

and re: Rolling back to Flash Player 8?? Come on now how many websites even support Flash 8 any longer? That would limit me to less than half the websites I currently frequent.

I've been running on V8 for sometime now. My observations are: it never crashes, AND if I'm losing some content, I sure can't figure out what it is. Every site I go to displays and, as far as I can tell, displays properly --- animations included.

Now, it occasionally says, "you must update", I decline, and the site just goes ahead and runs anyway. Am I missing something?

I'm not a developer, just a user, so I can easily wait.

Nothing personal Greg but as you see this has been an issue for a long long time now and I don't think it is getting the attention it deserves.

Peoples browsers have been crashing for a year or close to it because of this issue and as of this moment I see no mention in any official capacity about the problem even existing.

To me and many others that's one year to long.

HS.. (I saw your post before you edited it.. :))

As I've written before, if you need 'official' support then you have to open a case. Darren and I do what we can here, but that doesn't necessarily include answering all PM's. I try, but in some cases I just don't have a good answer. The above is all I've got for now. Open a case, post your case #....

My apologies BWolfe as I did not open my messages before hand and that's why I changed my post.

    I have opened a case# 172945118 for this issue.

What can I do to help get this problem resolved as quickly as possible?

Quite frankly I'm tired of IE crashing on me every other day.

We are aware of this issue and it is being actively investigated. We do not know when we might have a 100% fix, but the Flash Player 9 public beta (9.0.60.184 from labs.adobe.com) significantly reduces the rate of crashing for most people.

Things you can do to reduce the possibility of crashing:
-- update to the beta Flash Player Update 3 (9.0.60.184) from http://labs.adobe.com. And be certain to update to the final Flash Player 9 Update 3 release when it is available.
-- reduce the number of tabs open in an instance of IE7. Reducing the number of tabs simultaneously running SWFs will reduce the amount of memory consumed, and will decrease the likelihood for the crash condition to occur.
-- if you have X number of tabs open and crash, try limiting yourself to X-3 tabs or so. For example, if you have 7 tabs open and crash fairly consistently, try to limit yourself to 6 tabs. If 6 tabs fail, try 5.
-- Launch new instances of IE7, and limit the number of tabs launched per instance

Optionally, as suggested above, you do have the option to use Flash Player 8 in the interim:
-- rolling back to Flash Player 8 using the technote "Archived Flash players available for testing purposes" ( http://www.adobe.com/go/tn_14266). In this case, as GregRobert mentions, you'll need to be vigilant about preventing any Flash Player 9 updates. And note that this will prevent you from viewing any content that requires Flash Player 9.

If you are a Flash developer you absolutely -should- open a support case via http://www.adobe.com/support/flash.

If Adobe is aware of the issue, why isn't it resolved yet after almost a whole year?

    - I tried to install the beta version, but it wouldn't allow me to see flash objects.
    - I allready got the crash problem with 4 tabs open.
    - I have 2 GB RAM, so flash would have to consume a whole lot to use that all.
    - I also did get the Flash9d.ocx error when I have 4 tabs open without active flash objects (though I would have had a few containing flash objects open earlier, but had closed these tabs before allready).

I have now disabled the shockwave flash object in the Manage Add On Control Panel off of the Tools menu. This gets rid of IE7 crashing all the time, but now I can't see any flash pages anymore ofcourse.

Rolling back to version 8, well not a real solution as many sites use 9 allready

If Adobe can't even resolve a crucial issue like this after 1 year, it won't be long anymore before Silverlight will be the laughing winner....

I have provided answers before in private messages and forum posts and has of yet not received an answer so what other response do you expect?
    October 19, 2007
I would expect you would contact Technical Support so that they can open a support incident and provide you assistance. From the forum there is no way to even determine if your machine is stable and while your problem may be 100% legitimate every user feels that way and I honestly can’t count the number of times the cause of a technical problem has been a combination of obscure conditions. For every 100 users that encounter an issue there can be millions that never see it and that is with a known bug. If you want help you have to be more helpful. Call in and open a support incident and then if you still feel ignored then you will have a much strong case and maybe something can be done to improve things.

Well as you can read in several posts in this thread, many people have allready contacted Adobe support about this problem and didn't get a proper respons. This is a problem that has bugged countless of people for almost one year now and nothing has been done to fix it (First post in this thread is from december 2006!!!!). Just type Flash9d.ocx and crash in google and you will find so many people complaining about it and trying to find a solution.
I recently got a new laptop with Windows Vista and am really getting sick of IE7 continiously crashing and restarting, loosing all my open websites, caused by a failing Adobe Flash player.

Problems usually occur when streaming music and with several tabs open in IE7.

Well here's some info I can give you from the windows eventviewer apllication section, it's from a Dutch version of Vista:

For every 100 users that encounter an issue there can be millions that never see it and that is with a known bug. If you want help you have to be more helpful. Call in and open a support incident and then if you still feel ignored then you will have a much strong case and maybe something can be done to improve things.

If a reported problem has a known cause and a known solution it get’s posted in a technote and reported on the forum depending on where the problem was first reported. If it is not in a technote then it may be because the problem does not have a solution that will work for every system and configuration or the problem may have multiple causes which require different solutions. (Don’t forget, 3rd party software can play a part in unexpected problems too.) Support, and QE engineers from Adobe have participated this thread so though it may feel like it, you are not being ignored. It is difficult to provide a useful response to every post especially when no additional useful technical information has surfaced about the problem. Demanding a fix, does less to help then sharing system configuration, reproduction steps, information about the media being viewed etc.

    Greg you are right.

    Adobe what is going on???

Why won't you respond to this?

I just went to the formal support page listed at the bottom of this page. I cannot find this problem listed there!!! Is that possible? I'm old; maybe I just missed it. I cannot believe a problem of this scope would not be transferred to the formal support stream (we know Adobe employees monitor this "unofficial" support stream). - greg

As previous post mentions, any chance of an update or is it the Adobe mentality such that if they ignore thier users for long enough we will all just get on with it !!!
Please can we have a formal reply from Adobe even if it is to say sorry we can't fix this issue and you will have to use some other application if you use IE.
