Question

Flash9d.ocx version still crashes IE7

I'm running an HP XP media center with SP2 and IE7.
Have all the latest updates.
Uninstalled and reinstalled browser and Flash many times through many versions.
Tried the bug fix mentioned in this forum.

When on a page with flash video, ie. youtube, myspace, etc., the browser still crashes because of Flash9d.ocx. This has happened on a regular basis, for over a year now. Even with a single page up it will crash shortly after the page loads, but sometimes it will hold out a little longer.

I've been reading the forums so I know this is not uncommon.
I've tried to call Adobe, but their system disconnects the call after a couple of minutes on hold. (There's a pattern there!)

Microsoft says it's a problem with the Flash player. Adobe says nothing! Why don't Adobe and Microsoft communicate on this. I send in a crash analysis every time it happens. The report outlines, in detail, exactly what caused the crash. It mentions something about illegal memory access or overflow. I don't have one up now so don't remember the exact wording.

Is anyone working on this, officially, or has it been ignored?
Does anyone else provide a flash player, other than Adobe? This has been going on far too long.

I just deleted my version of Flash Player, downloaded an earlier version (9.0.47.0) and opened the page I was having problems with (this time in Firefox). The problem has mysteriously vanished. Can't get the site to crash for love nor money.

If I then open the site in IE7 it forces me to install the latest version of Flash (9.0.115.0) and promptly crashes the browser! And this is not a bug??

Rather strangely, Firefox will continue to use the older version of Flash so I would suggest ditching IE7 and the latest Flash update and head over to Firefox with an older version of Flash that works!

Let me know if you want a link to the older version of Flash player (and don't forget you'll also have to download the uninstaller from Adobe to delete the latest version). Apparently, this is an "improvement" rather than just deleting it from the control panel. Interesting use of the word "improvement".

I’ve practically given up on Flash—it just seems to like crashing the browser. I leave it disabled most of the time and only enable it when needed. I found a neat tool called Toggle Flash that does the trick from http://flash.melameth.com .

I have XP with SP3 installed and the only place I get the error is during a scan by Norton during its checking for
errors in the register, it tells me that the file Flash9d.ocx is missing. However I do not have any problems with
system crashes, probably due to my use of Firefox 3.0, I never use IE7, but do have it as a backup. In the Firefox
if a site requires IE, I have installed the IE-Tab as a part of Firefox, so I just flag the site as requiring it and all is
done, from then on it opens in Firefox with the overlay of IE. You may want to try Firefox and get away from
IE altogether. By the way I also have 2Gig of memory in my HP Pavilion a1022n.

I wonder if anyone has considered the possibility that they may have deliberately or accidentaly turned off a Windows service that is required for successful installation of the Flash Player pluggin.

I have been struggling with this for days untill I remembered that I used XPlite to uninstall Remote Registry. What has been happening is that I try to install Flash Player using a standalone installer I obtained using Google, but websites will not recognize it's presence and insist that I install it from the Adobe website. When I do I always get the IE7 crash problem with sites that contain flash content.

What I have done is as follows:

    1. Remove Flash Player with Adobe's uninstaller program
    2. Repair IE7 from tools/internet options/advanced/reset
    3. Remove the Flash Player ocx file from windows/downloaded program files. It is named with a number but you can recognize it by examining it's properties.
    4. Restore Remote Registry within XPlite
    5. Go to Youtube and install Flash Player plugin 9.0.115 again from the Adobe website

Maybe not all these steps are essential, but this is what worked for me.

I am keeping my fingers crossed, but I have briefly been watching Youtube videos without problems.

I totally agree with you on this. I had no problems until I downloaded FlashPlayer 9 version, and have had nothing but problems. Is Adobe going to fix this or can we download FlashPlayer 8 back so we have something that works?
FlashPlayer 9 does not work on the Wheel of Fortune game. I've done all the instructions told me to do to try to fix the problem, but to no avail. Adobe, are you listening???????:

As a site developer you can open a support case and the support team will advise you on how to reduce memory usage. Please open a Technical Support case via http://www.adobe.com/support/flash/.

Regarding Flash Player 9 crashing (primarily with IE7)

We are aware of this issue and it is being actively investigated. We do not know when we might have a 100% fix, but the Flash Player 9 public beta (9.0.60.184 from labs.adobe.com) significantly reduces the rate of crashing for most people.

Things you can do to reduce the possibility of crashing:
-- update to the beta Flash Player Update 3 (9.0.60.184) from http://labs.adobe.com. And be certain to update to the final Flash Player 9 Update 3 release when it is available.

-- reduce the number of tabs open in an instance of IE7. Reducing the number of tabs simultaneously running SWFs will reduce the amount of memory consumed, and will decrease the likelihood for the crash condition to occur.

-- if you have X number of tabs open and crash, try limiting yourself to X-3 tabs or so. For example, if you have 7 tabs open and crash fairly consistently, try to limit yourself to 6 tabs. If 6 tabs fail, try 5.

-- Launch new instances of IE7, and limit the number of tabs launched per instance

Optionally, as suggested above, you do have the option to use Flash Player 8 in the interim:
-- rolling back to Flash Player 8 using the technote "Archived Flash players available for testing purposes" ( http://www.adobe.com/go/tn_14266). You'll need to be vigilant about preventing any Flash Player 9 updates. And note that this will prevent you from viewing any content that requires Flash Player 9.

My personal experience is my XP Pro computer only crashes from this malady when I'm in CNET.com. No other time as of yet.
    December 1, 2007
I've also noticed it on CNET, after playing this review, URL:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/video-players-and-recorders/lg-bh100/4505-6463_7-32312334.html

After viewing, I tried closing the browser and IE 7 crashed.

Expand the C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash directory, and double-click on FlashUtil9b.exe. Make sure all your browsers are closed, then reboot.

Anyone try this worked for my problems.

"Expand the C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash directory, and double-click on FlashUtil9b.exe. Make sure all your browsers are closed, then reboot."

I just tried this, and the Flash Player still crashes while running the local doppler radar loop at weather.com. It doesn't crash initially, but if I zoom in or out, and it has to reload so many frames, that's when it crashes.

3/Repair Internet Explore 7: Clic on START, open RUN and type or paste this: rundll32.exe setupapi, InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%Infie.inf

    than clic on OK.

    4/ Reboot

5/ Go to Windows Update to see if some Updates are ready for you and in case install Updates.

6/Go to Flash Player download center and install the last version.

I am also having endless problems with IE7 and FF2 closing down when playing flash games, viewing videos in you-tube and bebo.. I am also getting total shutdown and restarts (3 today) .. with 3 different reports from microsoft.. A driver problem, a hardware problem and a RAM problem.. some days as many as 15 browser closings. I have un-installed flash and shockwave players and re-installed them twice also un-installed Firefox. I have un-installed my nvidia driver and got the latest one installed. nothing is consistent with some days only a couple of error blocks. I have tried everyone I know for help and getting nowhere. A couple of shockwave plug-in error blocks too. I asked in a site called All-Experts and even they replied that they had no solution :(

This problem is continuing to haunt me. I run Windows XP media center edition 2004 with everything updated and tweeked to the hilt. I have 1gig of RAM. I did the uninstall with the ADOBE uninstaller and then a reinstall, but that only seemed to work temporarily and now we are back to regular crashes when either MySpace or YouTube is loaded on a given tab.....It is really irritating me at this point. Any help/commentary other than that already noted here will be of great value.

I had the same problem, but I think I've figured it out. I uninstalled by going to the following link: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=2

I downloaded "uninstall_flash_player.exe" for Windows. As a precaution, I also uninstalled other Adobe products, like Reader, by going through Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs on my computer. I then installed Macromedia Flash Player 8 by downloading "install Flash Player 8 ActiveX.msi". (You'll need to search for this because I've already forgotten where I got it on the 'Net. Anyway, so far, I've had no problem with the Flash9d.ocx error message. I'm not a computer wiz, so I apologize for the simpleton explanation of what I did. Good Luck, everyone!

Can we concentrate all discussion of IE7 crashing into one thread, preferably 'Flash9b.ocx crash once again'????

I just wrote an explanation of what we're attempting to do to fix this as we continue to develop the latest beta of Flash Player 9..

Replying to "BWolfe [ADOBE]" from 8/24/07, I can't find anything regarding your comment "I just wrote an explanation of what we're attempting to do to fix this". Can you tell me what you or Adobe wrote?

Wow, I've only just begun to experience this Flash problem in the last couple days, but have had IE7 installed for a week or two. Can anyone state in simple lay language if unstalling the current version and reinstalling the new version fixes the error? Can anyone at Adobe give an update on any of this? I haven't found any comprehensive info.

Figured I'd give it a shot...

WARNING: Harykosek solution: i have no clue what you will do to your OS if you follow Harykosek directions :)

However, legitimate reinstallation did not fix the problem. I think it is website specific (at least in my case). Since I experience it only on certain sites (very small percentage)...since a lot macromedia is heavy in scripting, maybe it is occasional bug in website creator's scrip / macromedia engine?

We should list webpages where we experience those problems and find out if others find it there too.

I reported this issue to Macromedia flash player support...hopefully some response will come...keep you informed
