Frustrating problems with Flash Player - help please!

I'm posting here in the hope that someone can help me resolve the problems with flash player that Adobe's own email support cannot.

I have two laptops, one running XP, one Vista. Both display the 'blank screen' whenever I go to a site which uses Flashplayer, be it Youtube, Volkswagen, or any number of smaller sites. It's a real problem now and quite infuriating that no decent support is available. However I have religously followed all the advice from Customer Support, uninstalling and reinstalling, checking permissions and reading all the KB articles as requested. No luck. I have edited the registry. They have even had me uninstall Firefox and roll back to IE6 claiming that IE8 and Firefox were the problems! So now I am simply running IE6 and still no luck. Perhaps somone can help me get a least one of my laptops working???

The easiest is probably XP. I have XP on a Sony Vaio. Now running only IE6, Firefox uninstalled. Flash has been uninstalled using their own uninstaller.

I have reinstalled as administrator. I have checked SWF too is installed. I am only running Windows Live Onecare for Anti-Virus and Firewall. I would much prefer to run Firefox but would like to get Flash working first.

SWF Flash10d.ocx is shwon as installed in IE6's Manage Add-on's window.

I would really appreciate help from anyone who really knows how to solve this.

Does your computer have an Intel processor? If so, here is a partial solution...

Partial solution: Adobe Flash Player 10 is the problem.

Uninstall or drop 10 and reinstall Adobe Flash Player 9 from the Adobe archives. You will not be able to view films from sites that require you to upgrade to Adobe Flash Player 10 (FB, etc.) will still not work, but you will be able to see all other sites... Youtube etc...

    February 15, 2010

Hi julieromo, It is always best to understand when you suggest to other users to try something regarding a Flash Player issue.

Here is a quote from Adobe regarding your advice: Quote" Error installing older version: The version of Adobe Flash Player

ActiveX that you are trying to install is not the most current version. If you previously installed a later version of Flash

Player for Internet Explorer, you may be prevented from installing an earlier version. For example, if you installed Flash Player 9.0.115.0 and attempted to install version 9.0.47.0, the installation would fail."

So thanks anyway, and we are not looking for a "partial solution", we want a complete up to date Flash Player installation

in order to be in compliance with any and all Web sites that one would choose to visit.

Flash Player version 10 is not the problem, otherwise the entire world would be posting here on the Adobe Forum.

What amazes me is that you just registered today 2/15/10 at 3:30 PM and evidently have no problem since you posted

no thread, but instead came here to this thread to offer your incorrect "advice" which Adobe clearly states above would fail. So your "partial solution" is not even a partial solution, it is a Failure.

Hi Tim, Don't update a Microsoft update that came out 2/9/10, MS10-015, KB977165. It is being reported that it is causing the BSOD(blue screen of death) for all users of XP that have installed it.

    Hi

Ok, I've installed the Java update and both IE and FF are showing plugins installed. Add/Remove shows Java 6 update 18. Unfortunately still no flash yet.

    February 10, 2010

Hi Tim, good job on the Java too, you are doing just fine. You did remember to Reboot afterwards?

    Ok, you are getting there:-)

Now, go to Start, Control Panel and you should see the Java icon(coffer cup) Double click on that so it opens, then click

on the Advanced Tab. Double click on the "Default Java for browsers". When it opens, make sure there is a check mark

in the "Microsoft Internet Explorer" and also the "Mozilla Family". They both need to have a check mark in the box beside

them. If not, put a check mark in with a click in the box with your mouse. Then at the bottom, click on apply, click on OK and close out and go back to your desktop. Now you need to Reboot.

    Hi

Thanks for your help so far - very clear instructions.

I did reboot after the Java install. I have now checked in control panel.

Both IE and Mozilla are ticked. I have rebooted again.

    Thanks, Tim

    Hi.

    My timezone is UK.

Sorry, my mistake with the terminology. I have Shockwave Flash Object (IE) installed. Medium is set as my security level. It was on custom, but I reset it back to Medium when I rolled back to IE6.

I have an entry in Add/remove for J2SE Runtime environment 5.0 update 3. I have nothing else Java, DLM or Getplus listed.

I hope this helps, and thanks for your continued advice.

    Tim.

    February 10, 2010

Thanks Tim for responding so quickly and confirming the Shockwave Flash Object.

Ok on the Security setting to medium.

On the Java that you have installed. This may be part of your problem since that is an old version. I am going to get

instructions for you on what to do and the correct way to install Java.

Just wanted to post this so you know. After we take care of the Java, then I think you'll be able to install FF.

Please wait until we take care of Java.

    Thanks,

    eidnolb

If my clock is correct it is about 5:30PM your time, so we'll try to get this finished for you this evening.

Hi Tim, I have changed my mind on FF. Go ahead and install the latest FF now. The reason is that when you update your

Java, Java will install into your FF browser at the same time they install into IE.  I had forgotten about that when I told

    you to wait.

So go ahead and install the FF browser and then I'll post the instructions for the Java install.

You can post back to me when you have FF installed.

    Thanks

Hi Tim, Let's tackle XP first. I am going to withhold judgement on the person that gave you that "advice" for the reason that this is an Adobe Flash Player Forum and I do not have all of the facts they were presented with.

Having said that, go here to the test site: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about Then post back the results.

There is a process to this: First you identify the problem then apply the correct solutions. So that is the way I will address this.

    Thanks

Hi Vicente, Eidnolb, thanks for your advice.

I have tried turning off the pop-up blocker, reducing security etc and it did not help. I have no other antivirus on at this time. However I did go and do one final uninstall/reinstall and delete all possible history files.

Incredibly, and I don't know why, from the flash player site I can now see the movie playing there and get a message saying I have Flash Player 10.0.42.34 installed!

I really don't know how this happened. So I now I guess the question is, dare I update to IE7 or 8? Should I install Firefox? And then please could we start on vista?

    February 9, 2010

Hi Tim, thanks for the info. I understand after going thru all of the uninstall/install etc that you would be in a hurry to have XP and Vista issues solved.

However, follow me on this and please don't get ahead of me. As I said, there is a process. No, do not yet try to reinstall

any browser updates. Let's take care of XP first and in the proper order. Don't assume anything, we need to confirm and then move on to the next step.

Do you know how to find the Flash folder files? If not, I can give your directions. This is your next step.

    Hi Tim,

The first thing that came up to my mind is that there may be a anti-virus software in your computer? I don't know what your computer has exactly installed but check for your filter section in your ad-blocker or anti virus software(if you have any).

On the other hand, make sure that all the files from Firefox, internet explorer etc. were uninstalled correctly(prevent deleting files manually by just sending the program files folder directly to recycle bin). On the other hand if this problem persists try downloading Google Chrome OS(which I currently use for browsing) or Opera; both of them are pretty decent browsers with very few problems.

By the way, in Internet Explorer in the bottom right hand corner there is a little square box with the icon of an eye, double click on it and it should show the security level that your  browser is using.

    Hope this info helps,

    Vicente.
