Going Crazy: Why No Sound w. Flash 9 in some but not all sites w/ embedded video?

i have going crazy with no sound w/ Flash Player 8 or 9 in Internet Explorer (IE) with playing embedded video. this problem occurs with many websites with embedded youtube or other flash videos. the sound bar was set to zero, but even if i drag it to a higher level, there is no sound. yet, when the same video is played from youtube directly, it works perfectly.

when i uninstall Flash 8 or 9 and reinstall an older version such as Flash 7, the sound plays perfectly without problem.

i am running win xp professional sp2. latest updates/patches installed. ie 6.

i have tried the following:
1. the k-lite codec trick - does not work.
2. scanned for virus/spyware - none found.
3. uninstall all Flash w/ adobe uninstaller and reinstall the latest build - does not work.
4. clean out all registry entries related to flash and reinstall - does not work
5. deleted quicktime - does not work

can someone please help me? i searched everywhere and this is driving me mad. i saw simliar posts but none describes my situation and offers a fix.

OK people - listen up. This is the fix for Windows and I suspect Mac and Linux too.
Make sure that your green speaker plug is stuck into the green hole. Don't plug it into the blue hole. That is the wrong hole.
Depending on your sound card or chipset, you should get a new device aquired option dialogue when you make penetration. Select the front panel (which turns into line out) or line out.
Line out is where system and browser sounds are sent.
Browsers, reg hacks, codecs make no difference. It is a hardware issue.

exurber I could just hug you.

After two months of searching and trying all sorts of thing you fixed it for me. This has happened to me twice. Suspiciously, both times I had unplugged the computer to rearrange the room and when I put it back together the flash sound didn't work.

The first time I called the computer tech to the house and he fixed it in about 5 seconds. Then he said he wouldn't let me pay him since all he had to do was plug in the speaker. Remembering that, I have made sure that all the plugs were pushed in a hundred times. However, I didn't think that the plug might be in the wrong color. They do look alike until you use a flashlight to see.

Thank you sooo much. I was thinking I'd have to call the tech guy again. I'm so glad you fixed it and I don't have to look like the idiot I am.

The other day this happened to me. I had updated real player and later that day went to watch a video on You-Tube it had no sound. This was driving me nuts as it worked early that day. I was about to give up and try all these suggestions above when I noticed that when I opened You-Tube and clicked on the video the sound was turned way over to the left. I clicked it back over to the middle and sound was there. Some update must have turned the sound off. When I have gone back to You-Tube the setting is still in the middle. Check it first. Hope this works for some.

I tried the regedit process and carefully followed all the steps but when I double click to import the file, I get an error message stating, "the specified file is not a registry script you can only import registry files". I titled the file missing.reg and then I tried wavemapper.reg. I tried importing from within the registry editor. Please help me! I'm using Windows 2000. Could that be relevant to this problem?

the Windows Registry Editor thing didn't work for me, but finally found something that did! i had no sound on any of my flash files (videos, music) and now everything is back in 100% working order. i know nothing about computers, but it had something to do with downloading a different codec pack (whatever that is!) and uninstalling an old one. just follow the directions--if i could do it, anyone can!

    http://www.nosystemsounds.com/

GO TO THIS SITE and just follow the directions--hopefully you'll have your sound back in no time!

    good luck and God bless!

    Hello!
I have no sound in flash videos (eg. youtube) both in firefox and IE
I checked the registry, drivers, codecs - nothing works :(

What I've noticed is that every time I visit youtube, a file "sounddata.sol" is created in folder ..\macromedia\flash player\# shared objects\

i've opened it in notepad - it says "4TCSO soundData volume mute" (so no wonder there is no sound :|)

I deleted the file - but it is created again when i visit youtube. I tried to be smarter, changed "mute" to "on", but when i visited youtube it was replaced again. I changed file properties to read only - then it created another file.
oh, i have the same thing with myspace :(
    I'm getting really frustrated :(

    anyone can help?? pleaaase?

I'm sure something like this has already been posted, but this is one thing that can make you lose sound in flash:

it is very likely in this case that somewhere along the line your soundcard output got switched to 48kHz
and you need to switch it back to 44.1

I don't know what causes it to do this, but this happens to me sometimes when I resample audio
and the first time this happened it took awhile to realize this was the problem

if you can find the setting on your soundcard's for the output sample rate just make sure it's on 44.1kHz
sorry but I can only explain step by step based on what I'm using right now, which is a PC with a RealTek soundcard.
but whatever your soundcard is, it should be relatively the same process so this still might help you

For anyone having this problem with Windows and a RealTek soundcard:
go to Control Panel > Realtek
on the Audio I/O tab, click the wrench icon next to where it says "digital"
now you'll see the output sampling rate. make sure it's at 44.1kHz
if you change it to back to 44.1 and you still don't hear the sound in flash player just restart and it should work

I had this problem and the registry edit did not fix. The reson was that the file msacm32.drv was not installed so adding it to the regristry did nothing. A simple search of windows/system32 will tell you if the file is presnet or not. If it is not then you can add it by installing a new hardware device under the control panel. The device the the Microsoft Audio Compression Manager (hence the MSACM32 name of the drv file).
    From memory (not good)
    Install new hardware:
    Yes, Hardware already installed option:
Add a new hardware device (last option)
    manualy install (advanced):
    Sound, Video and game controller:
    Have disc:
    browse to windows/system32/
    use "mmdriver.inf"
    choose the Microsoft Compression manager

It should now work even before it asks you to reboot.
    Good luck

I have been going crazy with this one too but I finally found a solution. Here it is:

Go to a page with a Flash video on it.
Click on the video to activate Flash, then right click on it to bring up the Flash menu.
Click on "Settings", then click the "Advanced..." button.
This should open a new browser window with the Flash Player Settings Manager.

Look on the left side, under "Table of Contents" and "Flash Player Help", for "Global Storage Settings Panel"
Click the "Global Storage Settings Panel" link. This will load the panel on the right side in a Flash object.
You will find that the "Allow third-party Flash content to store data on your computer" box is unchecked.
    Check that box!!!

After the box is checked, it should save the setting right away, but I had a little trouble getting it to save the setting. I had to close all open Internet Explorer windows and go back and check the box several times, but finally it saved the setting. Once it did, I had audio in my embedded YouTube videos again.

ccleaner worked for me after nothing else did.

It is worth a shot if your registry looks ok.

Figured out how to fix mine. I had the same problem it seemed like. I'm running windows XP Home Edition. Problem started for me when I updated my sound device hardware off of the Microsoft website. My computer went haywire when I updated. I had no sound on anything and my windows media player just came up with errors when it tried to even play music off of my hard drive. After playing with it for a few hours, I had to rollback my sound device (Realtek AC97 Audio) to the point before the update. That restored all sound function except the problem you were having. Picked up some clues looking through the forum, found out my sound settings were still set to modem something or other. Went in and changed all settings back to Realtek AC97 Audio and fixed all problems. I hope this solves your problems too.

    Step by step:
    1. Control Panel- Sound, Speech and Audio Devices- Sounds and Audio Devices
    2. Hardware- Check all device status'
    3. Properties of any device not working
    4. Driver- Roll Back Driver
    5. Restart Computer
    6. Step 1
    7. Audio- Reset Default Devices
Problem went away for me at this point Good Luck!
