How can I install Flashplayer when Adobe asks for me to shut programmes that are not open?

I have tried repeatedly to download Flashplayer 11, but I am instructed to close programmes that are not even open. Do I have to delete them from my computer to get the update? Meanwhile I cannot watch things I want to see. I've tried with Internet Explorer, Chrome and Firefox, all to no avail.
