OK.

Problem solved - simply!

Secret is to turn off ActiveX filtering.

On an IE browser page click on the cogwheel icon (top right hand corner of screen)

From the dropdown menu select 'Safety'.

Chances are that ActiveX will display in a second menu - with a tick alongside it.

Click ActiveX to disable it.

Job done.

Why, oh why, this cannot be explained when the problem is so well known!

Checking for ActiveX Filtering was going to be my suggestion after finding out which browser you were using.  Glad you were able to solve the issue.

Thanks for responding.

Just a great shame that a simple answer to a well known problem wasn't even hinted at in the Windows installation instructions. All it would take is "Ensure ActiveX filtering is disabled." with a link to 'how to do it'.

Kind of endorses my view that instruction manuals are written by experts who can't relate to the problems faced by Joe Public.
