I'm constantly asked to install Flash Player 10.1

It's insane the amount of times I'm asked to install Flash Player 10.1, I then click on install and the next window tells me to close Internet Explorer, Yahoo and Windows Messenger. I do then a few minutes, few hours or the next day it's the same thing over and over again and it's getting on my last known nerve.

I have Vista Home Premium 32 bit, Internet Explorer 9

Please help save my sanity, I live on the 5th floor of my building and the window is open. I trust you know where this is leading.

    A few questions:

    • can you see the Flash animation at http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ ?
    • what version does it tell you on that page is installed?
    • is the Shockwave Flash object enabled in Internet Explorer?
    • what files do you have in C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash ?
