Question

Install latest versions

After W7 reinstallation I noticed FlashPlayer and Adobe Reader came with it but they were not the latest versions, so I downloaded and installed them from Adobe.com but two things happened: even though the installations were successful, the old Reader version still showed up in my programs list and neither the Reader nor the FPlayer files were in my downloads file.

Further, I downloaded FP for Firefox, so I am in vain trying to find the one for IE8 of whihc I suspect I have an old version.

Thanks

Flash Player and Reader share similar installer technology, which is produced by a third group at Adobe that handles product distribution.  Once the installers have successfully completed, they delete themselves.  That's intentional behavior, but I can't really speak authoritatively to the rationale.

There are three major variants of Flash Player (and in reality, closer to 30), one for each browser plug-in architecture.

NPAPI - Firefox, Safari and variants

ActiveX - Internet Explorer and Edge

    PPAPI - Chromium, Opera, etc.

If you go to our download site - https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer, we'll present you with the option appropriate for your browser.

If you use more than one browser, you'll need to do this for each browser, with a couple exceptions:

    • Google Chrome - Flash Player is a built-in component, so you don't need to install anything.  Updates are handled automatically through Chrome's updater.
    • Internet Explorer and Edge on Windows 8 and higher - Flash Player is a built-in component, and updates are delivered via Windows Update.

For the other browsers, we'd strongly recommend that you enable Automatic Updates for Flash Player.  This ensures that you get the latest available security patches, as soon as they become available.  It also means that you can safely ignore messages about needing to update Flash Player, as bad actors regularly attempt to get people to install malware through fake pop-up notifications.  Distinguishing between real and fake notifications isn't always easy, and enabling automatic updates solves the issue.

Finally, sometimes you'll get a notification dialog, but it's because the website can't differentiate between when you don't have Flash Player installed, and when your browser is simply preventing it from running.  In most current browser versions, you also need to Enable Flash Player in your browser.

What version is the old one, exactly?

I can't see it anymore because the newly installed showed up in the Programs list, however, the FP 10ActiveX is 10.0.22.87 and it is the one I could not find in Adobe's site or by googling it.

Anyhow, isn't it weird that in the last few months the downloaded file of Adobe programs disappears from the Downloads file once installation is completed?

We don't deal with Flash Player here, it has its own experts in its own forum. You said the old Reader version showed up.
