When I try installing Flash player I am told to close svc host. What is this and how is this done?

I have never heard of the Flash Player installer requesting to close svchost; this is most unusual.

Try the following: download the offline installers from http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/installation-problems-flash-player-windows.html#main-pars_header (under the heading Progress bar hangs...) and save them to disk, then restart Windows and run the downloaded installers before doing anything else.
