Question

Installtion "unsuccessful," but Flash is up-to-date??

I received notification for an update of Flash. I clicked "install," then got the message: unsuccessful because of an error. Went to Adobe support page. When I tested to see if I have Flash, it said I have the latest version installed and it's up to date. Also, the page with the moving animation indicated Flash is installed and up to date (the animation was moving). So how could I be up to date if the update installation was "unsuccessful"?

Mac OS 10.8.5

Browsers: Safari, Firefox, Chrome, Opera

(all up to date)

    Hi,

When you go to https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player.html and click the Check Now button what Flash Player version does it state is installed?  20.0.0.286 is the latest version.

I can take a look at the FlashPlayerInstallManager.log and install.log files and see if it contains any errors.  If you'd like to provide them, do the following:

The install.log file contains entries for every app installed on the system.  We only want the section pertaining to the Flash Player installation.

    • Open the console app (/Applications/Utilities/Console)
    • In the left panel, expand /var/log and look for install.log file
    • Since the Flash Player installation occurred yesterday, look for the section that begins with "JS: Flash Player Install: Performing volume check for" towards the end of the file and ends with something similar to:

              installd[9359]: PackageKit: Removing client PKInstallDaemonClient pid=26357, uid=0 (/usr/sbin/installer)

              installer[26357]: Running install actions

              installer[26357]: Removing temporary directory     "/var/folders/zz/zyxvpxvq6csfxvn_n0000000000000/T//Install.263570kRBLd"

              installer[26357]: Finalize disk "HD"

installer[26357]: Notifying system of updated components

              installer[26357]: **** Summary Information ****

              installer[26357]:   Operation      Elapsed time

              installer[26357]: -----------------------------

              installer[26357]:        disk      0.05 seconds

              installer[26357]:      script      0.02 seconds

              installer[26357]:        zero      0.01 seconds

              installer[26357]:     install      6.10 seconds

              installer[26357]:     -total-      6.18 seconds

    • Copy and paste the entire section into a new text file and save the file

    Obtain the FlashPlayerInstallManager.log file:

    • Go back to the Console app
    • In the left panel, expand ~/Library/Logs sections and look for FlashPlayerInstallManager.log
    • Right-click on the file name and select 'Reveal in Finder'
    • Finder will open to the location of the file

Upload both files to cloud.acrobat.com using the instructions at How to share a document or some other file sharing service of your choice (that does not require log-in access) and post the link to the uploaded files in your reply.

    Thank you.
