Is Anyone Else Sick and Tired of Flash Player 10 Not Installing?

I've tried everything under the sun to get Flash Player to install on my PC, to no avail.  I went to the Adobe site and followed their instructions to the letter regarding how to resolve Flash Player installation problems.  I've also tried every suggestion on every discussion board/forum that I could find.  Flash Player still won't install or run.  I have no Flash Player capability on any site, including Youtube, which out of the blue stopped letting me watch videos because I have an "old version of Adobe's Flash Player" and I must "Get the Latest Flash Player."  Believe me, I'd like to get the latest Flash Player.  Not only have I wasted hours of my life trying to find a solution to this problem, hours that I can never get back, but it also exceedingly frustrating to go through one attempt after another after another with the same unhappy results.  Judging by what I've read online, there are untold multitudes experiencing this same problem.  What can be done?  I've all but come to the conclusion that the answer is nothing.

Forget the work-arounds!  Just uninstall Flash Player and install Shockwave Player!  This did the trick for me!  No more missing items on webpages and no more prompts to download Flash Player, which means no more freezes on the install.  Our IT guy said Shockwave Player is the newest version of FlashPlayer.

    Your IT guy is mistaken.

And you were visiting sites that had incorrect checks for the Flash Player version - they were looking at the Shockwave version by mistake.

However, that might be a common problem if many sites have made that mistake.

Upgrading the Shockwave player as well as the Flash Player can't hurt.

I got mine to work.  Here's how:  http://forums.adobe.com/message/2069313

    Vista?  Don't care.

IE7?  Probably still valid to try this.

    Your mileage may vary.

...and here is what I did. Again, Im on a macbook pro 2008 edition on 10.5.7.

First of all, I tried everything simple I could think of. I have been having issues updating my CS3 Suite from day 1 (the updater would fail every time) and was told I needed to uninstall the Creative Suite and reinstall it on another profile to troubleshoot it. That would mean losing my Dreamweaver files, so I just put up with it.

    I tried:

    • Quitting my browsers, reopening, downloading Flashplayer 10 and installing. Installer ran, Suceeded, and erased any player I had period. FAIL
    • Uninstalling the flash player, reinstalling Flashplayer 10, Installer ran, Suceeded, still no player. FAIL
    • Uninstalling the current flash player, reinstalling Flashplayer 9, Installer ran, Suceeded, reinstalled Flashplayer 10, removed all Flash player versions from browser detection . FAIL

I decided to stay with FP9 so that I could view ANY flash content until I got this fixed.

I had heard something about Filevault compatibility issues with the Adobe software. To me, this was stupid that this would exist and from what I read more people were getting flamed for USING the available Filevault options than getting real answers as why there was a conflict between the two.

"Your answer for the issue with Adobe and FIlevault? Don't use Filevault..." What kind of response is that, people? I feel the same about IE for you Windose users... you should all convert to Firefox or Mozilla, but is that the answer to why something should supposedly work on your computer and it is refusing to do so? Not really...

So, seeing that I am no longer in the need for the physical increase in security via File vault and really wanting to be able to not only view those little movies embedded in my Facebook posts but also try updating my creative suite3, I tried turning off Filevault.

"FAILED: You must have at least 37.7GB available Disk space to Disable FileVault"

What?! What gives... why would they need you to have that much space to do a disable? Either way- I have 21gb available at the time. Time to archive some photos and movies.

I dumped everything in my pictures folder but my iPhoto files and all of my movies onto a backup drive and fixed permissions freeing up a total of 53gb, which were all out of whack. I restarted my computer and then proceeded to turn-off file vault which took a few hours.

Today, as I started up Adobe PhotoshopCS3- my updater ran, as it has, and prompted me to update. I figured- What the heck, I'll try- and sure enough.. the updater.... worked. I now had the complete updated version of CS3... but did my flashplayer update also? Nope. Still Flashplayer 9.

I ran the updater, and voila- I now a the owner of a shiney new working Flashplayer 10.

So.... if you are on a Mac like meeeeeeee... you might try turning OFF filevault also if it is enabled. If you dont have it on, Maybe free up at least 50gb and see if that helps.

Otherwise, we're singled out in this array of "HAHA! You LOSE!" in the world of updaters from Adobe. Good luck... and good night.

    What is Filevault?

I managed to do this on both my computers after trying only a few times.  It was frustrating, until I found this forum.  In the end, I followed instructions I found here, in an answer to someone; and they worked.  What made the difference was this:

    1) Instead of just uninstalling Adobe Flash player myself, using the Windows uninstaller, I used the precise link I found here.  It did a much more thorough job.  I checked "details" when it was finished and discovered, to my amazement, that there had still been bits and pieces of old Adobe players in my files.  Now I was really rid of former versions.  That link is essential.  I suspect also that if there have been unsuccessful attempts at installation, it is necesary to start all over and, once more, to run Adobe's own uninstaller.  This should clean out debris from previous unsuccessful tries.

    2) I gave up trying to install from AOL, which I usually use, and which absolutely will not work for this purpose. Instead, I  began from Windows IE 8, which I had just installed.  The little "Active X" control didn't respond at first but finally did, enabling me to continue.  (It is not a yellow band on my computer and never was; and at first, it didn't seem to respond; but then it did, and uttered its little "beep" noise and flashed to announce its presence.)

    3)  After that, an installation actually worked -- but only after I had done a cold start (not a restart).

An afterthought:  It is still true that I can't make the Flash player work on AOL until I have first brought up IE 8 and run the Flash player there.  It seems that it has to initialize on IE.

Maybe I was just lucky, but my installation did finally all work, even though my equipment is old and creaky -- Windows XP on a 2003 desktop, and Windows XP on a 2005 laptop.

In general, I believe that Adobe could have made this installation much easier by including with the Installation program their own Üninstall program, which should have run automatically first.  I don't see why they didn't.  This seems to me a bit slipshod, as though someone wanted to get the new version "out the door" under some sort of deadline.  Everything should have been transparent for the non-technical user.

Apparently we need to do something to get Adobe's attention.  And since they won't answer questions about Flash over the phone (gee, I wonder why not?)

Everyone with a problem should send complaints via the 'send feedback' link at the bottom of the page.

Also, go to YouTube, Facebook, and every other video outlet and send them your complaints about Adobe...  if they aren't going to listen to us then maybe they'll listen when companies take their business elsewhere.

After all these posts I am surprised Adobe isn't doing something about it. I am on a Mac. I have a Power PC G4 and a new Powerbook. I keep getting messages from various sites that I need the latest version of Flash, so I download Flash 10 and install it. (I close all my browsers before doing so.) Installation says successful, but I can't find Flash 10 on my system and I keep getting these freaking messages that I need the latest version. When I do install I only get a message to upgrade, which I click. We can't really take our business elsewhere if the sites we are using use Flash. But these sites should also take into consideration that not everyone has up-to-date software.

I had this issue LAST year, also.

Im on a Macintel OS Version 10.5.7

Flash Player 10 wont install on my system, and when it tries- it tosses out the previouse version so I have no plugin working.

The latest flash player that works is Flashplayer 9 and even after uninstalling it, restarting my computer- and reinstalling it- FP10 WILL NOT WORK.

Not only that, but my Adobe Creative Suite has never been able to update... EVER. It fails every time, and Im afraid to re-install it and lose my Dreamweaver information.

I agree, I'm running Vista Ultimate w/ IE 8.  Won't do anything.  I try using the link above and it looks like it was loading.  Then an error comes up "Internet Explorer cannot download install_flash_player_ax.exe from fpdownload.adobe.com.  Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site.  The requested site iseither unavailable or cannot be found.  Please try again later."

My laptop win XP and IE 7 can and have downloaded the Flash 10 with no issues.  I think it is either IE 8 or Vista not compatible with Flash Player 10.  Maybe someone can figure it out.  Does anyone know how to uninstall IE 8?  I just want to downgrade and go back to IE 7 for the sake of flash player working.  anyone?

    Thanks

Although Flash Player works very nicely on my Internet Explorer 8 (on XP), if you want to uninstall IE8, see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700

P.S. the error you got from the Macromedia download site sounds like a temporary unavailability; try it again before you uninstall IE8.

I have a Mac G5 running OS 10.3.9 and even though its an older model still works great - except that Adobe Flashplayer will not even download! It's really frustrating that you take good care of your equipment to keep it out of landfills..... yet the software giants want you to upgrade every year or so!

Have you tried to download it (FP9) from this page http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/ ?

Yes.  I have tried downloading older versions of Flash Player, more times than I can count.  They do not install/run properly either.  It would seem that the folks at Adobe and sites that require Flash Player want to ensure that we have the latest and greatest (or is it grating?) version of Flash Player.  However, in an effort to improve their Flash Player, Adobe has inadvertently prevented myriads of people from being happy.  What I fail to grasp is why Adobe hasn't already found the root cause of this problem and corrected it (perhaps an Adobe employee can comment on this).  Judging from other people's comments/posts on this forum and many other websites, this problem with Flash Player has been going on for a long time, far too long.  If I was responsible for something like this at the company where I work, I would have either had this problem corrected in short order, or I would no longer have a job.  Come on Adobe!!!  We need you to correct this now!!!  Show us all that you have outstanding customer support by correcting your monumental screw-up.

Yes.  I agree with everything you said.  I finally gave up about 3-4 wks ago and installed Flash Player in Firefox so I could actually access some sites I needed to access.  I tried again last week, again wasting several hours.  I just logged on to the forum hoping someone might have come up with something I hadn't already tried.  I don't know if it is an incompatibility with IE8 or Windows XP SP3.  I have Adobe CS4 Master Collection.  All my software is legal.  Like you I am absolutely sick of it.  Adobe needs to pull their finger out and FIX this or remove Flash Player 10.

This is such a useless topic - Mac OS, Windows, IE8, Firefox; all mixed up in the same thread.  Does anyone really expect help here...?
