Primarily because of the lag. I don't think it was meant to support as many entries as it has and I figured flash would be a great way to circumvent the lag issue. Is there any type of conversion software that would do that type of thing? I believe it was done in javascript.

There's no automated converter that I'm aware of. ActionScript and JavaScript are similar languages, but you would need to build something comparable in ActionScript. If it was me, I'd probably try and profile the JavaScript to see what the slow code is, and look at possible optimizations before scrapping it outright.
