No audio at live radio sites

Question

My company just started supporting a new customer site and some of the users want to listen to live sports radio from such sites as ESPN. The problem is there is no sound. Also the player controls do not appear.

They can listen to podcasts from the same sites and the player controls are there and work. But when it comes to the live radio shows, the controls either aren't there or have no effect and in either case there is no audio.

They have a firewall in place that is locked down so exceptions have to added for each website they want to access. I've added all of the site domain names I can find related to the sites they're trying to listen to but it hasn't help. I'm not convinced it's a firewall problem as I don't see why that would block the appearance or function of the player controls.

I've tried this on 2 PCs at the site and tried both IE11 and Chrome. Flash and Java are both up to date. The computers are up to date for Windows updates. I've checked the event logs on the PCs and there are no errors.

At this point I'm out of ideas. Any suggestions?

Well, I'd connect a computer to the opposite side of the firewall and see if everything works as expected. If it does, you've got a firewall configuration problem. You'll probably want to use a network monitor (wireshark, etc.) to determine what ports and protocols are in use and punch the appropriate holes.

If it doesn't resolve, your problem isn't the firewall. I'd start by seeing if you have sound in other applications. How about HTML5 video? If it's everything but these specific Flash sites, try simplistic animation and sound like here: http://www.homestarrunner.com/.

Details on the OS and browser would also be useful. Do you have the problem in IE and not in Chrome/Firefox?
