No Sound in Firefox on Windows 7 from YouTube, CNN, CSPAN unless Protected Mode is disabled.

I have no sound when playing Flash videos on any Windows 7 PCs from the following standard websites - YouTube, CNN, CSPAN and ESPN. Some YouTube videos provide both video and audio if I enable HTML5. Most do not. CSPAN Videos provide video but no audio. CNN Videos provide video but no audio. I have no problems on any Windows XP PCs.

I have had no sound in Firefox since Firefox 12 with Flash Player 11.3 and higher. I upgraded today to 11.4.402.287 Flash to see if that would fix things. It did not.

I only get sound if I disable Flash Protected Mode which is unacceptable in my corporate environment. I can not downgrade to Flash 11.2 because it too does not provide protected mode. My audio drivers are up to date. I tried changing the audio playback to 16-bit 44100. I have disabled Silverlight. I have disabled all plugins except Flash. All test sites show the Flash version as installed and correct.

Nothing I try among all the recommended solutions I have found on Forums.Adobe or elsewhere on the Internet resolves the problem.

As of today, I am running:

Windows 7
Firefox 16
Flash 11.4.402.287

I will provide whatever debugging information I need to to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. My Windows XP customers are being upgraded to Windows 7 over the next few months and I need to resolve this issue asap. Any help from Adobe staff will be greatly appreciated.

Please let me know what I can do to resolve this problem without disabling protected mode or back-revving to Flash 11.2.

I had the same problem as you on Windows. There's clearly a problem with the way Adobe setup the interaction with the drivers. The way that I was able to "fix" it was to set the playback resolution at 16bit/44.1kHz and speaker setup to "Stereo" (somehow it was on surround).

It could definitely be a driver thing. We switched to the newer CoreAudio Windows APIs, and are now taking advantage of the full capabilities of your sound hardware. This may expose latent problems with your installed drivers.

If you haven't done so already, I'd recommend updating to the latest sound drivers available for your system. If that doesn't help, I'd like to get some more information about your particular hardware and driver configuration, so that I can track down the issue.

For what it's worth, I'm not seeing this failure on Win7 x64 with Firefox 17 or MSIE 10 Preview using Flash Player 11.5.502.110 or 11.6.600.88 (our daily development build). I have a different sound card, though: Conexant 20561 SmartAudio HD.

On my Win7 x64 machine, I just tried the following combinations successfully using the Youtube link for the True Blood intro provided earlier in the thread, restarting the browser between each change:

24-bit 192000 Hz
24-bit 96000 Hz
24-bit 48000 Hz
24-bit 44100 Hz
16-bit 192000 Hz
16-bit 96000 Hz
16-bit 48000 Hz
16-bit 44100 Hz

Can you post the output of the DirectX Diagnostic Tool? (Start > Run > Dxdiag) I'd like to see if I can find a machine with the same OS version and sound card to see if the issue reproduces there.

I did the same thing as far as changing all of the sound combinations. No improvement. IE remains fine. I upgraded to Firefox 17 today and also Flash 11.5.502.110. No improvement. I also uninstalled and upgraded the RealTek Audio drivers (June 2012) for my HP 8000 Elite Energy Star minitower model. Three reboots. Sound works fine everywhere else. Still nothing inside Firefox as above.

Can you check your Volulme Mixer? Since Flash Player have to use own sound control based on protected mode archtecture for FireFox, it is in separat control from FireFox one.

The sound is cranked up. I've tried all the easy simple obvious stuff. Putting ProtectedMode=0 in the mms.cfg always makes it work without any other adjustments. Also, adding &html5=1 to a youtube URL also helps if I join the html5 beta project. Those are the only ones that work other than dropping down to 11.2 version of Flash. Is there any debugging I can post to find the exact issue?
