Only a single copy of the installer can run

Only a single copy of the installer can run is the error message when trying to update Adobe Flash. To my knowledge no other installer, including an Adobe installer, is running... even checking opt+cmd+esc, there is no application to force quit. Viewing Activity Monitor is of little help since the processes are disguised with unrelated identities.
