Problem Running Flash Player in IE6 with WIndows ME

I just helped a friend fix his Dell desktop running Windows ME.

I needed to reformat the HD and reinstall the operating system.

I am certain the pc is 32 bit, and is running Internet Explorer 6 along with Windows ME.

The pc works well, but slow as you might imagine, with no errors, no problems with email and no problem accessing the internet.

The  problem arises when I navigate to a website that needs to untilize  Flash. The page loads, but where a flash video normally is, there is  just a black rectangle. If I right mouse click the black area, it tells  me the version of Flash and nothing else. If I unistall the Flash, of  course the website then  tells me I need to install Flash.

I  downloaded and installed almost all of the versions I could find on the  Adobe website, one at a time, uninstalling each before installing the  next. I had zero success.

The owner of the PC assures me that the exact same websites I tested, did show the Flash video at one time.

I  need to know what version I should use with ME, and if there are some  settings I am overlooking which as causing the FLASh not to work.

I even tried using Netscape, but couldn't even install the Flash with that browser, let alone get it to work.

Please see if you can help, as my friend is elderly and I really need to try to help him out.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

According to the System Requirements http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/systemreqs/index.html the current Flash Player requires Windows XP as a minimum.  However, I am running the latest Flash Player successfully on Windows 2000 with IE6.

You write that you have installed various Flash Player versions (possibly from http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html); can you tell me what version you have actually tried to install?

Now, let's try to diagnose: can you see the Flash animation at http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ with whatever FP version you have now installed?

Can you try to adjust the Security Zones on Internet Explorer, and see if this allows Flash content to display?  See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/174360 for details.
