Shockwave Flash Object Missing?

I've tried many many times to uninstall and reinstall the latest version of flash player and it still says that I need flash player version 9.0 or higher in order to complete the process.  When I look under manage add-ons to see if Shockwave Flash Object is enabled, it is missing.  How do I correct this situation?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

From your mention of Shockwave Flash Object I assume that you are using Internet Explorer (what version?) on Windows (what version?).

On IE | Tools | Add-ons, can you change to Show all add-ons?

Windows 7 internet explorer 8.  I did change to show all and it is not listed.  Thank you for your quick reply
