Shockwave/flash player crashes

I have uninstalled and reinstalled flash player at least twice, but I keep getting browser messages that I need to install/updae flash player or plugins to view content. And Shockwave keeps crashing. It stalls the browser. This seems to happen regardless of whether I am using Chrome or Firefox. I use Windows XP. I have an old laptop with relatively small RAM. Is that the issue?
