Slow download of flash player 10.1, why?

I'm currently trying to download flash player 10.1 for my system but with the getplus downloader its running at approx 4bytes/s, not even downloading in kb/s.  I thought it may be an error with the program so i tried to just download the standalone executable and i'm getting a download speed of 3bytes/s, again i could write the program faster.

I have check my internet connection speed and with downloads from other sites i'm getting 600-800kb/s.

I have managed to download it once but it just took 5hrs and crashed when it came to installation.

I'm trying again but it looks like i'll have to cancel it at this rate due to going to bed

Any ideas, or shall i just give up and not use half the sites on the internet until a cure is found?

Window 7 32bit,

2GB Ram

IE8,

AVG Free.

If you are having problems with this download please click this Akamai link http://ip.akamai.com/case/B-3-P618CJ

It will then show a Tracking Number and that's all.

Then please post a reply in this forum with that Tracking Number and the time and time zone you tried the download so I can find logs on the Akamai side.

The more exact the time you report, the better.  Use military time or use AM or PM and don't forget the time zone.

I will post the results of my investigation on this forum once I have identified the root cause and have resolved it.

    Thanks,

    Hi

    Regarding flash player slow download,

It is nothing to do with what web browser you are using or what security software your pc is running,

The problem is with the non secure link which adobe provide to dowload the flash player.

They provide a 'http' link instead of a 'https' link which is more secure.

    This is the original link:

    http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe

Here is the secure fast link:

    https://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe

Use the link above and the download should be fine

If you have any questions or queries, then just PM me

    Ben

I am also in the UK on BT same problem... anyway a solution is to use https instead of http:

    these will work:

    for Windows:

    https://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe

    for Mac:

    https://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player_osx_intel.dmg

    these are the original links:

    http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe

    http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player_osx_intel.dmg

    Regards,

TamaRS, that https fix is awesome, just awesome. I don't know how you worked it out. I was in the middle of a 'adobe install' with their funky downloader running like a cripple with two broken legs running through treacle on a high-gravity planet, and I tried your https trick without stopping the regular adobe download in case I lost 20 mins of that download (7.7%...). But the https download took maybe 3 SECONDS.  Woot. Thanks very much.

I may have had this problem for 6 months, but didn't find this thread before. I'm a UK resident with BT Broadband. I'm an IT professional and other downloads from all over the world have been trouble free, as you'd expect, including downloads from the USA hundreds of times larger than the 2.9MB of flash player.

Flash is essentially broken for me in the UK. The last successful upgrade for flash for me was 10.1 a few months ago (I think).  10.2 installer wakes up every now and again and tries to install a new version of flash and fails.

I thought I'd tidy things up by using Adobe's flash uninstaller to remove the prior (working) version and do a clean install of the latest. Big mistake. Now I have no flash and am stuck with the excruciating download speed from the Adobe flash download page. It's looking like maybe an hour to download 2.9MB install_flash_player.exe - we'll see - my confidence is low as the download is clearly getting slower as time progresses so it may never get there. With 2MB downloaded of 2.9 (at 1.7KB/sec) it seems to have stalled. LOL it's actually much worse than a dial-up modem from 20 years ago.

I'm guessing there are hundreds of thousands of UK users with this issue, but the majority of those are simply stuck on a prior version of Flash so the problem is less apparent.

edit: I've just thought of something ironic... the uninstall_flash_player.exe downloaded absolutely fine, just the install fails. Thank you Adobe.

A guy from Akamai in Boston called me yesterday (Akamai hosts Adobe).  He was able to download the file perfectly from Boston (connecting to server in the UK).  But I could not.  Actually, I was able to download ShockWave, but then Flash would not download.  Then I couldn't even get ShockWave a second time.  You might try early in the morning.

Anyway, the Akamai guy had me run some trace routes, and it seems that what is happening is that the download is freezing within seconds of connecting.  If you go look at your download folder, you will probably see a file of only 20KB there.  Then, after about a half hour, the Adobe/Akamai disconnects.  Actually, it seems to think that it is getting a disconnect message from my computer (or, at least, that is what I could understand from the Akamai guy).  But it has something to do with the connection between the server and our computers - but the Akamai guy doesn't know what it is yet.  And it is intermittent.  He "purged" the server, but that didn't help.

Try early in the day and see if that helps.

Ooops - I just tried downloading Flash at 7:30am  here in London and it instantly froze after downloading 7KB of data.  I guess it is not a "time of day" issue.

The link given for troubleshooting seems to be faulty. It gives no opportunity to enter any information

I got a telephone call from a guy at Akamai (he saw my number and called it) but it went to voicemail.  He will be looking into this problem.  He is in the States.

I think all that link does, is, it logs your IP address and the time, that way, if you click on that link immediately after you tried (and failed) to download whatever Adobe file, it gives them something they can trace to their server - or, at least, that is what the voicemail said (or how I interpreted it).

Had exactly the same problem for the last few updates, downloading painfully slow and in some cases not downloading at all. Turned off Norton anti-virus, tried the download again, it took no time at all. I'm a UK based user too. Give it ago and see if it works for you.

    Hope you get it sorted

p.s. after checking back on the download page it says, 'You may have to temporarily disable your anti-virus software.' Teach me for not reading things properly!

Maybe your's was a Norton problem, or maybe it was just random chance that it downloaded after you turned Norton off, because that is not the problem that the rest of us are having, i.e. I don't use Norton - I use either AVG or Microsoft Security Essentials, and I never turn my anti-virus off, and sometimes it downloads fine and sometimes it doesn't.  Also, this problem seems to be confined to downloaders located in the UK.

P.S.--Adobe never got back to me.  I'm not surprised.

Hmm well I'm not sure then, it is a really strange problem, I too have had a fairly inconsistent download speeds, some times fast and others very slow- yesterday was the first time after a few attempts I turned Norton off- but if it's not the same for you guys sorry I couldn't shed any more light on it. But your right it does seem to just be a UK problem. I'll try contacting adobe too, see if they reply to me and I'll keep you posted.

    Good luck!

It's 22:22 here in the UK on the 28th March 2011 and I'm being asked to update Flash Player to use with Firefox 3.6. The download is reporting a speed of 1.1kB/second and it has so far managed to download 149 kB in about 15 minutes and it says, probably optimistically, that there are 21 minutes remaining.

There is nothing unusual about this PC and speedtest.net gives me a speed of 4.6 Mb/second. All other downloads are very fast and streaming BBC iplayer works well.

So it must be something to do with the servers at the Adobe end. But what can it be? The fact that there don't seem to be any comments on here from Adobe people and there don't seem to be any solutions after all this time tells you that 1) Adobe just don't care 2)They aren't very good at fixing problems even when they try.

At this point with the download at 158 kB of 2.7 MB, I'm going to give it the chop and cancel the download.

Roll on the time when we don't need flash for video embedded in web pages. When is this supposed to happen?

This problem has been around so long that I am quite sure it is an Adobe problem.  Nothing wrong with your anti-virus, or ISP (I also use British Telecom).  It's an Adobe problem.  Just wonder when they are going to fix it.  Don't hold your breath.

Agreed. horrible slow download of updater. starts at reasonable speed then tops out at 4 kb per sec.  uk mac and firefox user

Adobe, you are lucky you are a monopoly provider.... downloads from other sites coming in at 50 to 100 times faster...

something needs attention - did you piss off anonymous ???

Definatley slow... started to download the 5.5Mb file, then shortly after started another unrelated download from YouSendIt which is 22Mb. The 22Mb downloaded in about 1 minute but had to 5 more minutes for the flash player to download. So probably Adobes servers/bandwidth are either 1) rubbish, 2) overloaded with so many users or 3) intentionally restricted. Either way it makes Adobe look bad so they should sort it out. Took me a while to register on this forum due to slow page speeds.

im having the same irritating problem and to top it all of, after wasting the past 4 hours of my life waiting for this junk to download i get 'error: installation failed' as soon as it hits 100%. now carlsberg dont do flash players but if they did adobe's would still be more irritating
