slowdown by factor of ten since the security fix in 18.0.0.20x, still there in 209

What was the update that fixed the ByteArray security hole about two weeks ago? Something like 18.0.0.203... It introduced a murderous delay or performance degradation for my application. The application encodes to mp3 a sound recording made by a Flash sound recorder in my Web page. With Flash Palyer 17, encoding a 3-second recording took about 3 seconds. Now with 18.0.0.209, it takes 30 to 40 seconds on the same computer. Here is where you can see this:

Use Safari or Chrome on a Mac OSX. (I don't think it matters whether you use Pepper in Chrome or the default Flash plug-in.). Visit this page with your microphone enabled:

Click Check mic access status (see "true" displayed).

Click Show mic settings. See the usual Flash Settings dialog, allow sound recording, check your mic level. Click Close.

Click Record 10 sec. Speak for three seconds. See the level numbers in the "Mic activity" cell. Recording is automatically stopped after 3 seconds (even though the button says 10 seconds).

Click EncodeNextSound. You will see the waveform and be able to play the recorded Wave audio immediately. Depending on your browser, you will be able to play the Mp3 audio or the ogg audio after it has been encoded. With the Flash versions that were released over the past three years PRIOR to the very recent security fix, the encoding takes less than 3 seconds. With the current Flash (18.0.0.209) you have to wait for 30 or 40 seconds. After that, you can play the encoded sound.

This kills my application that has been used by hundreds of students. In four weeks, school year starts again, and more than a hundred students will need to use the course materials based on that recorder/encoder. Can you feel our despair?

I know of one other sound-recording/encoding app on the Web that is built in Flash and is now showing the same symptoms. The recording part works fine, but the encoding takes ten times longer than it used to.

Looks like Bug 4020231 is about the same problem from some other people.

And Flash 18.0.0.203 terrible lag seems to be about the same problem.
