system required latest version of flash player?

When I  tried to use Adobe I received a message indicating that I required the latest version software. I finally got it installed and have checked this but still get the same message to update required.  It is like my system is unaware the software was installed. At one point it asked that I close Firefox. I did this but Adobe didn't believe me
