Question

Ver 10.1 not installed although it says 'successful' - 32 bit

My problem is very similar to the one gbsib described in his recent post, but I have an older computer - 32bit.  Running XP Pro, SP 2, with IE 8.  Both receive automatic updates.

I was using ver 10.0.? with no probs.  When prompted to update, I uninstalled using Windows Control Panel, Add/Remove, then downloaded and installed 10.1.  It says installation was successful, but it shows no sign of being installed.  Besides not working, it does not show up in my list of programs in the Start menu, nor does it appear under C:/program files/Adobe.  In Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs, sometimes it shows up on the list and sometimes not (depending on which attempt) - when it does appear, no file size is listed like all others, but it will show a version there - ver. 10.1.53.64.  After uninstalling 10.1 to try again (both with Adobe and Windows uninstallers) sometimes when I try again to install, it says it is already installed, sometimes not.

In repeated attempts I have tried everything I know how, incl. disabling my anti-virus firewall (AVG ver.9) and my pop-up blocker during installation,

rebooting after uninstall and also install, etc.  I have also slugged through the help section on the Adobe site.

I see certain info was requested in gbsib's thread for his newer OS.  To answer the same questions for mine, here is what I get:

In C:/Windows/system32/macromed/flash, I have Flash10h.ocx, Flashutil10h_Activex (Instal/Uninstaller), Flashutil10h_Activex.dll, genuist, and text files named KB923789 (setup information) and  FlashInstall.

Under IE Tools/Manage add-ons, I don't show any Shockwave Flash Object or any refernce to Flash Player.

If it makes any difference, I also have Adobe Photoshop CS installed with all of its related programs, as well as Adobe Reader.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi OldTex, well you've seen what gbsib has went thru. Thanks for including your Flash files. At this time, I wouldn't do any more Uninstalling since your Flash files are all correct. The fact that the Shockwave Flash Object is not Installed in the IE add ons is a major issue. This is the ActiveX Control that works with your Flash files.

Do you have any version or listing of that Shockwave Flash Object in your All add ons, in any category?

During your last Install per the files listed above, did you receive any messages? You might want to search in all add ons to be sure that add on wasn't overlooked.

When this does not Install, it could be caused by a couple of things. The main cause is that the Administrator account was not used to Install. This account has the permissions necessary to Install that ActiveX Control and write to the Windows Registry.

When a computer is new, the Administrator account is the first one set up, so it must be used. Second an Anti-Virus/Firewall can also block the ActiveX Control. Now your AV (AVG) is very easy to disable. However it has a couple of components that need disabled as well. I don't know if you are aware of that or not. Do you have a version number for the AVG?

You didn't have any problem Installing any other Flash files, so your Uninstall was successful.

    Let me know.

    Thanks,

Thanks eidnolb.  Yes, I've been following gbsib's thread.  He is much more sophisticated than I am with computers, so it's been discouraging to say the least.  I have learned quite a bit trying to keep up with you two, though.

I am the first and only user this computer has ever had, so I don't think admin rights are my problem.  My AVG is version 9.0.829.  I have been disabling the firewall (that's the easy one), but have been unable to turn off the active shields.  I've looked through every category of add-ons in IE but no mention of Shockwave.  I have the Adobe install and uninstall on my desktop.  I have not been getting any messages during Install.

Hi Tex, Well, I think gbsib is going to see if Microsoft can help. Thanks for all of your information. Don't be discouraged, we'll see where you are and go from there.  I know about AVG and can tell you how take care of the components. AVG is very easy to understand on how to disable them.

Having the Install and Uninstall on your Desktop will save us some time. We'll probably get the info ready tomorrow.

I'll post it and then if you have any questions just post.

    Thanks,
