Video Streaming on tv.adobe.com (and others) not working - have stack trace

Hi,

a couple of days ago I noticed that video streaming on a number of sites - including tv.adobe.com, comedycentral.com and espn has stopped working. Sadly from memory I cannot link this to a specific event or time - i.e. not sure if software got upgraded or changed when this happened.

The Flash Player windows just remain black, bu right-click confirms that Flash itself has started (i.e. Settings and Version Number menu entries are there and work). On tv.adobe.com I even see the ATVPlayer version

Note that Flash in general (games etc...) does work and  the "big" video streaming sites such as vimeo, youtube, BBC iPlayer also all work.

The issue happens in ALL browsers (see below)

My config is as follows:

- Early 2008 Macbook Pro with Lion 10.7,3 (NVIDIA Geforce 8600M GT 512MB)

- Firefox 12, Chrome 18.0.1025.165, Safari 5.1.5

- When I first saw the issue I was on Flash 11.2.202.229 (or .228?)

- Have since verified that it also occurs on an older 10.3 version as well as 11.2.202.233 (latest) and also 11.3.300.231

- I do NOT operate any other firewall or virus scan software at the time of testing

There is a lot of this sort of complaint on the internet over the last few years so I already tried a number of the things mentioned elsewhere - all unsuccesful:

- Uninstalled/reinstalled Flash (all version above)

- Relaxed Storage (Cookie) setting to always allow local storage

- Cleared all browser caches / cookies / etc...

- Disabled ALL other browser extensions such as Ghostery, Adblock Plus etc..

- Reviewed kernel / system appfirwall logs - nothing suspicious found

- Hardcoded my DNS servers IPs as opposed to just using my router on 192.168.0.1 acting as DNS proxy (one of the more strange recommendations on the net)

Note that another Windows PC with Flash 11.2.202.233 on the same local network works fine - so I have no reason to assume that my local router / network is buggered.

Also verified on the router that no special firewall rules were set.

I then installed the debug version of 11.3 and also put the following two lines into /Library/Application Support/Macromedia/mms.cfg:

ErrorReportingEnable=1

TraceOutputFileEnable=1

Unfortunately I could NOT find any logfiles anywhere but tv.adobe.com now popped up the following stacktrace when trying to play a video:

Error: Error #2134: Cannot create SharedObject.

I am pretty much stuck now - any idea as to what the problem might be or how to proceed diagnosing?

(Also any idea where those logfiles might be - they are not in

/Users/username/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player/Logs/)

Big Thanks for any help!

Jens

Hi Jens,

Could you delete the following folders?

  • ~\Library\Preferences\Macromedia\Flash Player\
  • ~\Library\Caches\Adobe\Flash Player\

From the stack trace, it appears that it's unable to create the LSO's and I want to make sure we're not running into a permissions issue.  Once those folders are deleted, try again and then take a peek at the folders to see if anything was created.

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris,

thanks for your tip. I didn't get around to trying it, as I have just solved the problem:

Unless I misunderstand how things are supposed to work, I think I also might have found a bug (or at a minimum an usability issue):

When I talked about having relaxed all the local storage settings in my original post, I meant that in the System Preferences / Flash Player / Storage pane I had set "Allow sites to save information on this computer". I also had done some experimention around the "Ask me" and "Settings by Site" options - all without success. I had navigated to that pane by right-clicking on "Global Settings" from the non-working video players.

However, just now I discovered the following: When I navigate to http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager03.html (the embedded Global Storage Settings Panel) I found that in fact "Allow third-party Flash content to store date on your computer" was disabled all along!

So effectively, the System Preferences Pane and the Global Settings Manager were not in sync / had conflicting settings and it looks like the Global Settings Manager took precedence. When I enabled local storage in the Global settings manager, things started working immediately.

This is extremely easily reproducable by the way: Just change some settings in the Global Settings Manager and then right click "Global Settings" within it and the Preference Pane coming up will be in conflict with the settings manager.

(Even if this is somehow by design, its quite confusing)

Hope this helps future readers with the same issue. Also, this is an issue in 11.3 Beta 2, so maybe your teams can still fix this for 11.3

Thanks,
Jens
