Question

Videos don't work on IE8 or Firefox, have tried all I can think of. Please help?

A bit of background.

My computer runs Windoxs XP 2002, with Service Pack 3. About two months ago I noticed that youtube did not work on IE7, so I recently downloaded IE8...needless to say videos still don't work (on youtube and bbc amongst others). I have Adobe Flash Player 10.1.102.64 (the latest I think).

By don't work I mean that when I go to bbc the vidoes either appear as a still, which one would normally click on to start, or they appear blank / white. When they appear as a still and I click on the video, the place where the video was goes blank.

Youtube loads really strangely (I think kind of like HTML version) and no vidoes work.

I have checked that all add-ons are enabled, and my Java is up to date. I have also fiddled aroud with the "enable hardware acceleration" but to no avail.

On top of that I have uninstalled and re-installed both flash player and IE8 (the second time I downloaded IE8 I clicked on the 32 bit version). When installing flash player I used the desktop version and disconnected from the internet just to make sure.

Having looked on some forums I tried Firefox but again no luck. I am getting really frustrated as I have no idea what to do.

In terms of do I operate 32 bit or 64 bit, I don't know (if someone could tell me how to find out then I will).

Please can someone help?

Thanks

Will

Adding the read permissions to the registry key as noted above fixes the problem when the 'read' permissions for "USERS' is missing.

In systems I have checked the key has the USERS permission ACE before 10.1.102.64 is installed and missing after the installation.

On Windows Server 2003 the key inherits 'Authenticated Users' instead of 'Users' which should be true for all systems post-XP.  The inheritance seems to be removed and keys are not copied in correctly.

I believe, and this should be checked with Microsoft, that the inheritance needs to be restored and the root of CLASSES/MIME.  This is what I have chosen to do as this is the way it is on all working systems.

The error may be caused by one of the trojans that has attempted to exploit Adobe Flash as this would cause Power Users(this account is missing too) to install a new control.  They could then be redirected to another rogue site where malware could be installed.  All of my systems run as standard users and I only run as admin to do installs and repairs so this exploit would not easily work.

This is a good warning to not run as a Power User.  As Administrator the exploit won't trigger as the administrator ACE has been copied to the key.

I believe this may be a good example of an 'Elevation of Privileges' type of exploit.  This is the Find-A-Hole-And-Make-It-Bigger Exploit (FAHAMIBE) Say that three times fast.

Kidding aside.  I hope this is useful to somebody but may not be the cause of all errors like this one so check very carefully.

I don't think this is caused by the newest Adobe installer or release.

    Hi all,

    Thanks for all your help.

Flash is still not working having amended the registry permission.

Does anyone have any bright ideas...at a loss.

Bizzarley the animations on the flash site work fine, just no videos anywhere else.

Jvierra - Thanks for pointing out security risks. registry amendments are beyond me and I do not want to mess my computer up so I think I will leave restoring the root be unless there is truley no other way.

    Thanks

    HI Hardy

The key specified in the forum MUST have read access for the Users group or in WS2003 and later for "Interactive". If you do not know how to check this key then you will need to get someone to do it for you.

I will not say this is your exact problem. I can only say that it is a problem that causes your symptoms and we cannot know what to do without checking the key.

I could give you a REG file but not knowing the condition of your system might make this a bad idea so I will leave it to you to check the key.

Adobe might set up a script that would dump the permissions or check them.

It is not clear at this point how this key gets clobbered. I suspect it is either a bad Adobe installer or, perhaps, malware.

I have part of a script but will not post it as it might create issues if other problems are present.

The MIME type should be owned by Adobe so they will probably know what the best approach to a repair would be.

Set Read permission for local users on

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\application/x-shockwave-flash
    Use Regedit.exe to make it.

Hi Tripec, that Windows Registry key you are referring to is one that is already being used by the Flash Player Installer. I fail to see your point. The correct Flash files are already Installed and the IE add on is also, so I wouldn't advise tampering with the Registry unless the former indicated doing so. Evidently that key did not present any problem, otherwise Flash Player would not have been Installed.

    Hi eidnolb,

Yes, you are right, the key is used by installer, but as you know you must install the flash player under full administrator rights and administrators have the rights. :-) Installer incorrectly set the reg key (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\application/x-shockwave-flash) permissions. Users and Power Users have NOT permissions to read it. That is the Adobe Flash bug in version 10.1.102.64 (the version 10.1.82.76 is OK)

Eidnolb, if you are so clever, try http://pocasi.idnes.cz or http://kraje.idnes.cz/ or videos under http://www.flixxy.com with the last flash player version 10.1.102.64 with local user rights. Than try it with the same user but in locat administrators group and you will see.

Hardy, add the above permissions and you will see, yupee - that is the solution. I had the same problem in our web pages and advertising and one hour ago I solve it.

    See ya

Hi, thanks for complete info, makes it a bit easier. I would go to this site and RIGHT click on the Adobe Flash logo, click on Settings>Display Settings and UNcheck hardware acceleration. I'm not sure if you accomplished that.

    http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

I am going to lunch in a minute and will post back other info. In the meantime, check in IE Manage Add ons under "Show" (very light text) in All add ons and Run without Permission for Shockwave Flash Object and make sure it is Enabled.

If you have Flash Player Installed for Firefox, then look in plugins for Shockwave Flash (SWF) and make sure it is Enabled.

Go to C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash  Open Flash and post back all files listed. If you see any NPSWF files, you will need to right click and then click on properties to obtain the version numbers.

If you don't find the Flash folder there, then Go to C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash and look there.

If you have a 64bit system, the files will be there.

    Thanks,

    Thanks for the reply,

I do have a 32 bit system - figured that out now.

Hardware acceleration already unticked and the Shockwave Flash Object is enabled.

The files I have in the folder you mentioned are:

    Flash10l.ocx                       ActiveX Control

    FlashInstall                         Text Doc

    FlashUtil10l_ActiveX            Application              (Adobe® Flash® Player Installer/Uninstaller 10.1 r102)

    FlashUtil10l_ActiveX.dll        Applcation Extension

    Thanks

Hi Hardy, You have Flash Player and the add on Installed correctly. Go to Tools, Internet Options, Security and make sure it is set to Medium for the Internet Zone.

Also, let me know what Anti-Virus/Firewall you are using. Also prior to your current AV/F, what one did you have?

    Thanks,

    eidnolb
