Download the "offline" installer: Flash Player Plug-in (Mac OS X)

You must quit Safari, as well as ANY dashboard gadgets which connect to social media, or news feed sites. And if you use a plug-in called "MenuTab" you need to quit it too.

Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor

ANYTHING saying "Dashboard", ANYTHING saying Safari, and ANYTHING saying MenuTab... will need to be manually terminated.
