Question

When I watch a basketball game replay on watchespn.com, why can I no longer move the viewing time ahead or back?

I have the latest Windows 10 and the latest version of Mozilla Firefox for Windows. I also have the latest version of Adobe Flash Player. When I watch a basketball game replay on watchespn.com on my desktop pc, I can no longer move ahead or back by sliding the box on the time line on the bottom of the screen to the desired location. When I slide the box or just mouse click on the time line, the replay can actually jump forward or back or just move randomly. It is very annoying. Sometimes I cannot watch the entire game at once, so that the next time I try to watch the game I want to re-start it where I left off. When I click on the time line at the approximate time where I stopped watching previously, I can never predict where the replay will start. Again, it just seems to move randomly regardless of where I click on the time line.

Can someone please tell me what I may be doing wrong? This worked fine the last year or two, but does not seem to work now.

The extremely frustrating problem persists as of today.

It occurred when they started using a new player.

It makes playback of videos almost impossible, unless you want to sit there and watch the whole thing from beginning to end.

That royally sucks when, for instance, there are several events in one upload and you want to skip ahead to watch the second or third event.

They could work around it by ceasing to upload multiple events in one file.

I watch tennis. I love the announcer-free tennis match uploads. But trying to watch them is a complete waste of time given the new player.

Commercials are not the problem. I can mute the volume during commercials. The problem is having to sit through hours of programming that I'm not interested in.

Please fix the time bar preview slider.

    PS...

I'm an expert user. I've tried on different hardware, different operating systems, and different browsers. All the same result, for WatchESPN replays, the time/preview bar doesn't work.

Flash Player isn't a video player.  It's a language runtime.  We process the software written by the content provider and render it to screen.  It's low-level nuts and bolts stuff.

Given that the problem exists across multiple browsers running a variety of versions, some of which pre-date the change by a few months, I think it's safe to assume that this is a change that ESPN made to their site.  There's no generic change we can make to bring back their old UI.

Interesting.  Do you have the same problem in IE/Edge or Chrome?  Firefox uses a different mechanism for playing back video (particularly protected video).  When you right-click on the video, does it actually say About Flash Player?

I addressed this problem with watchespn.com also, and they indicated that it was a known problem that they were working on. The problem existed on any browser I tried, though I just (12/08/15 at 09:45AM) tried it on IE/Edge and it seemed to work fine now. I have FlashPlayer 19.0.0.245 installed as indicated when I right-click on the screen. Tomorrow night is another game I want to watch on watchespn, so I will report more definitively whether the problem is actually resolved or not. Thank you so much for your response.

I just finished watching the replay of the UConn Women's basketball game at Colgate on watchespn.com. I watched on both IE/Edge (FlashPlayer 20.0.0.228) and Firefox (FlashPlayer19.0.0.245). The problem as originally reported still exists regardless of the browser utilized. Regardless of where one clicks on the timeline at the bottom of the screen it is literally a "crap shoot" wherever the broadcast will pick up. It will even play "normally" for a while, come to a commercial, and then after the commercial either start again at the beginning or skip all the way to the end. This doesn't seem like it should be a difficult problem to resolve, but apparently it is.
