Question

why does google chrome download with flash player update?

I just went to the Adobe web site to install the latest version of Adobe Flash Player. I started the download, but then noticed that it was showing that Google Chrome was downloading too. Flash Player finished downloading first, so I simply stopped the rest of the download of Chrome.

Why oh why am I getting Chrome downloaded onto my computer when that's not what I asked for. Seems sort of sleezy of Adobe to do this, especially since I have no idea what Chrome is.

Can anyone explain what's going on here?

Regards, David

This has happened to me also.  One of the ways I judge the integrity of a company is based on whether they surreptiously slip extra downloads in.  Although Adobe has a box to uncheck, correctly or not, I typically assume that an update will not include unrelated downloads.  When I click "Update", I am not clicking "Add New Program".

The opt in/out box is in small print.  It should default to an unchecked box so you can opt in rather than out.  Alternatively, there could be 2 buttons.  One would say "Update Flash Only" and the other would say, "Update Flash and Download Chrome". But again...it all depends on the integrity of a company and its employees on how they get you to download a program that  you might not have judged to be necessary if  you had been made more clearly aware of what was about to happen.

Many software companies offer optional bundled software with their free downloads.  I do not want to enter a discussion if this is ethical or not.

In most cases you need to uncheck this offer on the download page, like

If you don't want any such offers, download the pure installer from http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/fp_distribution3.html
