We have received the below from Adobe customer support:

We have tested the latest beta (14.0.0.160) and the issue seems to be resolved however the beta is not compatible with windows 8 or 8.1.
We are awaiting further detail from Adobe on this.

Workaround for Windows 8/MS PowerPoint 2013 users.

I uninstalled updates: KB-2966072.and KB2974008 using Windows Update from the Control Panel.

Not sure if the presents a security  issue, but to be honest, after wasting 5 hrs last night trying to get the damn thing to work, am just happy I can use it now!

Has anyone reported this as a bug already? I use a powerpoint presentation with flashmovies on a shared drive for an entire company, so not able to revert to version 13 for everyone...

I cant reduce to 13 for some reason in the latest version of ppt. This is messing up all my lessons that use embedded shock wave flash elements. Years of lessons up in smoke. Adobe needs to sort this quickly.

What exactly means "cant"?  What is your operating system?
