Question

Windows 98 OS, Flash 9.0.277.0 consistently crashes or hangs on YouTube with Firefox 2.0.0.20

I had given up on getting Flash 9 to work on YouTube, but I thought I'd make this post to see if anyone has any ideas.  I have Windows 98 operating system -- so Flash 9 is as high as I can go.  Flash 9.0.277.0 -- the most recent version -- consistently crashes or hangs on sites with Flash content using Firefox 2.0.0.20 (the highest Firefox version I can have for my OS) or Opera 10.10.  (Every earlier Flash 9 version I tried also crashed.)  The site I really want Flash 9 to work on is YouTube, but EVERY time I  do an artist search and click on a link my computer hangs or crashes with an error message concerning NPSWF32.dll, the Flash plugin.  Is it a lost cause to get Flash 9 to work on YouTube?  I hope someone has an answer.  Thank you very much.

    I don't know if Youtube allows you to see content with FP9, but it certainly shouldn't crash your browser.

    I have only two suggestions, but I don't know if this will help your situation

    • try to disable hardware acceleration (Flash Player Settings);
    • update the device drivers for your graphics/video/display adapter.

    Thanks, ??b ??u?IIi?, for taking time to respond.
    I'm sure YouTube allows one to see content with Flash Player 9 since I am  currently watching YouTube videos with Flash Player 8 with Internet Explorer  6.0.
    In the Flash Player Settings, the "Enable Hardware Acceleration" box is  (and always has been) unchecked.
    I had to get a new monitor and a new NVIDIA GeForce 6200 graphics card this  past February.  I installed the latest display driver through the NVIDIA web  site -- version 81.98 released on December 21, 2005.  That is the latest version  available for Windows 98, and the company says there are no plans to release a  later version.
    On many -- really, most -- web sites, Flash 9 and Firefox 2 work great,  while on others the browser crashes and closes, or my computer freezes up solid  and I have to crash it.
    ALWAYS, when Firefox crashes I get an error message saying "This program  (i.e., Firefox) has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down".   Under "Details", it ALWAYS says, "Firefox executed an invalid instruction in  module NPSWF32.DLL." with associated computer gobbledegoop.  NPSWF32.DLL is the  Flash plugin.
    One thing is very curious about Firefox 2, Flash 9, and YouTube.  When I am  able to get onsite without Firefox immediately crashing, I can usually play and  replay Flash videos that are playing when the site first opens (i.e., at URL  youtube.com).  I ALWAYS get a crash when I click on a link that is there when  the page first opens or when I do an artist search and then click on a link that  comes up.  I do not understand the difference between these two cases (i.e.,  Flash working on an already playing YouTube video versus Flash crashing on a  YouTube link).  I hope someone can answer this question for me.  Not  understanding this difference is really bugging me.
    Thank you very much.

    There is no way of telling why the FP plugin crashes in some cases, but not in others.  It may be due to some accumulated memory, or it may be due to anything else.

    I am not sure what advice I can give you.  If it was on my system (and since you said you can watch Youtube on IE6 & FP8), I would try to uninstall the FP9 plugin, and try FP8 on FF.  You may be able to download it from http://www.oldversion.com/Macromedia-Flash-Player.html - however, it is unclear to me if this is the ActiveX or plugin installer, or both.

    The Adobe archive page (http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html) has all old FP versions, but the downloads are huge!
