also for some time I have a problem with the sound in Youtube

I would like to point out my original finding:  the video I originally had the problem with worked correctly after I de-installed the Flash player.

My goal in posting my finding was not to offer a universal solution but was in hopes that Adobe would be made aware that the Flash player triggered the problem.

I can accept that the source of the “glitch” is YouTube, after reading these postings, but the problem seems to be affected by Flash and is also affecting the proper functioning of Flash, so I still think Adobe should be concerned.

I am not a big user of the YouTube site; my main concern was with embedded videos.  However, I just experimented again, and, oddly enough, with Flash removed, when I selected a YouTube video, after displaying the message that Flash is required for video playback, it played the video with audio, without finagling.

YouTube is busy converting ALL their videos to "multi-format", in other words, MP4, WEBM and FLV code are now embedded in nearly ALL YouTube pages, so people on smartphones (Flash doesn't work with them) can now access videos WITHOUT having Flash Player installed.

Also, people who DON'T have Flash Player installed on their computer can view YouTube videos as HTML5 (MP4 or WEBM).

Google has acknowledged a "glitch in their code" with YouTube, which I'll go out on a limb and assume is where this is occurring. There is NOTHING you can do in Flash Player to change this. You can use the volume slider (it appears when you mouse over the speaker icon) to adjust sound in the meantime.

There are at least 10 threads for the problem with YouTube muting on the Flash forum, posted within the last few days.  Therefore, this is a recently emerging problem that a number of people have experienced.

This doesn’t appear to be a YouTube problem, since it seemed to start with the latest release of Flash, and goes away when Flash is uninstalled.

I don’t think that the “hover/slider” workaround, which would probably only be known to people who find it on this forum, is a proper solution.

a) The YouTube default shouldn’t be changed to mute.  b) Also, the speaker icon is a mute/unmute toggle, and that’s the way it should work.

To answer one of the questions, the embedded YouTube video I tried worked without Flash, but the YouTube site gave the message that the Flash Player is required for video playback.

I hope that Adobe staff pays attention to this forum and addresses the problem, because it is probably preventing a lot of people from hearing the audio, especially on embedded videos.

Well I did find one way to fix this issue, but of course if you remove flash Youtube will default to HTML 5 and will work fine.

The fix involves dropping flash down to version 10.3, and10.3 was the only version that worked every single time.

tried 10 other various means to get this working with the other versions and it was the most reliable.

confirmed it is a Youtube issue, since it happens on 3 of my PCs.

2 Windows 7 64-bit PCs

1 Windows 8 64-bit PC.

That's interesting that the older version of Flash Player seems to solve Youtube's default muting problem.  As you noted, it IS a Youtube issue.  In fact Google, which as most people know owns Youtube, has confirmed it on several of their help forums, and apparently the issue is being worked on, and will hopefully be fixed soon.  (...when what freezes over?)

"Thanks for your patience, all. We have been aware of this issue. It should be resolved soon.

While this issue is live, please try clearing your browser's cache and cookies, or the workaround that rdhuston posted:

The mute will keep coming back for each video you watch, but you can get your sound back each time by pausing the video, right clicking the little X by the speaker symbol and then clicking the speaker symbol itself.  Then start the video again.  Kind of a pain, but at least you can hear the videos until the problem is fixed."

I found that Flash Player causes YouTube to default to mute.  This is especially a problem when the video is embedded in a browser, because you can’t change it to hear the audio (when I click on the mute button, it doesn’t clear the muting).

I don’t know why this happens, but when I uninstalled Flash Player, the videos were not muted, and when I re-installed it, the videos were muted.

Thanks. The default muting is what is actually happening to me. When you delete Flash Player does YouTube default to Windows Media Player?

can you move the volume slider? you might have to hover over the icon for a second.

it will work after that for all other movies, at least until you close the browser or restart the PC.
