Flex 4 printing functionality request

Quite a number of requests that come up in Flex Forums relate to the difficulties with the limitations of the print functions in Flex through classes like flexprintjob - I think that it would be really really useful for Flex to take in some of the third party Flex components that have been created outside of Adobe to improve and expand printing and include them in the Flex core. As an example the Flexreport code that provides print preview functions and also the components that drive the printing functions in Buzzword.

Three reasons that printing should be prioritised:

1. A large number of the projects using Flex are in a corporate environment where printing of documents is vital.

2. Text layout improvements are a part of the Flash Player 10 and Flex 4, if that text cannot be printed out then the value of those layout improvements is wasted and a whole raft of potential killer Flex apps would be crippled.

3. I have noted that on a number of Silverlight groups there is quite a lot of dissatisfaction with Silverlight on its lack of printing and I can see printing as a great selling point for Flex and Flash over other RIA technologies.

Well, it's a great offer but unless it runs cross platform it's probably
easier for Adobe to make their own.

Really ? We're (still ?) doing ours server-side.

Tom,
The offer was to look at functionality as it was driven by 8 years of production requests, use it as ref implementation and security integration model - then it is Players team call to either implement it on native OS level or within the browser architecture and then on the OS level for the AIR/WebKit.
Honestly, with the browser restrictions we do more of client side PDF generation then native printing these days - but having that functionality is crucial for getting in some environments.

Anatole

Matt,
You might want to take a look @ our old (IE specific) printer implementation - www.htmlprinting.com - if you think it is something you like we can contribute the code. It also addresses security concerns of giving device context to the app - in both corporate environment and Internet. In fact, it is used in thousands of companies - from aerospace to medical.
We also have extension of PJob - to create queue of docs, assemble complex docs and device abstraction layer produce printout in different media - hardcopy, pdf or snapshots.

Anatole

Hi Steve,<br /><br />These are good ideas but probably not ones we're going to get to using just the internal resources for Flex 4. It is something that I can hope we will be able to improve as we enhance the printing functionality directly in the Player in upcoming versions.<br /><br />But we will do what we can to help promote projects that are making printing easier as we agree that it remains important.<br /><br />Matt<br /><br /><br />On 9/5/08 9:21 AM, "Steve Bradley" <member@adobeforums.com> wrote:<br /><br />A new discussion was started by Steve Bradley in<br /><br />Developers --<br /> Flex 4 printing functionality request<br /><br />Quite a number of requests that come up in Flex Forums relate to the difficulties with the limitations of the print functions in Flex through classes like flexprintjob - I think that it would be really really useful for Flex to take in some of the third party Flex components that have been created outside of Adobe to improve and expand printing and include them in the Flex core.
