Question

creating InCopy assignments

I'm working with InDesign and InCopy 2021 my understanding from the tutorials I have watched is that when I link an InCopy file into a text box in my InDesign file it should automatically create an assigment in the assignment panel. Instead it's appearing as a link in the links panel. I can then have to unlink the .icml file and export the story to InCopy and it will appear in the assignments panel but it also creates a renamed duplicate .icml file which gets kind of confusing. Am I wrong in thinking that something is not behaving the way it is supposed to?

I don't think so. When you create link to InCopy file you do link to InCopy file.

"Export text and graphics frames separately (including placeholder frames) using the Edit > InCopy > Export menu commands. Exported content is saved as *.icml files."

"From the Assignments panel menu, choose Add To Assignment, and then select New." https://helpx.adobe.com/incopy/using/sharing-content.html . I do prefer to do an Assignment first and then add to it all the needed frames.

It does not create an assignment, what you should see is a link in the links panel, as you've already noticed and it should also show up in the assignments panel as unassigned InCopy content.

If it's not showing up in the assignments panel, you are not using an up to date version of InDesign. This was a known bug with placed InCopy files but I honestly don't remember which version.

You'll need to update to InDesign 2021 and make sure the InCopy users are also using 2021.
